match report by John Rawson

For this game Yarnbury dipped into their pool of players and with centre Josh Bell coming in for captain Jason Avison in the centre and Joe Pinnick in for Josh Bateson on the left wing they became the 39th and 40th player to play in the league this season. The pack had a familiar look being same as last week with a strong bench of prop Lewis Atha, second row Ian Maycock and back row Adam Bateson.

Goole had the wind but did not get out of their half for the first quarter so dominant were the home side with ball in hand sweeping moves across the park and stretching the Goole defence.Goole have developed a reputation for moving the ball on their way to promotion and Twickenham last season but they were undone out wide by the Yarnbury side. After 5 minutes right wing Jack Brown was put away nicely by his backs and swept in for the first try.Unconverted in the wind from far out by stand Off Jarrod Huss. Then the forwards put on the pressure in the scrum and drove the opponents scrum backwards and the pick up gave stand off Huss the chance to make the line through the defence.Converting his own try Yarnbury opened up a 12 point cushion.

Goole got back into the game after loosing their hooker Chris Wood when centre James Shand burst down a narrow gap on the right to score for Goole and remind Yarnbury of the opponents propensity to move the ball at ev ery opportunity which had been few in the first half.Yarnbury needed to go again and Yarnbury Centre Josh Bell made the break and released the pacy Brown down the right only for him to be tackled into touch before Yarnbury scored again with Brown showing his pace as Goole gave the Yarnbury backs too much ball out wide.On reflection the first half saw the visitors drop ball on the attack whereas the home side made sure everything stuck and were good value for their three tries in arguably, the best 40 minutes of play from Yarnbury in the league since the first game of the season.

Goole regrouped after the break and took the game to Yarnbury and organised defense was the order of the day with both props Lewis Atha and Dan Penman standing out in their defensive duties putting in good tackling stints.Back row Sam Smith got over from close in after the home side were penalised for offside and Rhys More the stand off converted to reduce the deficit. However,Yarnbury pulled away again after Jack Brown was pulled down close to the line by a scambling defence.A succession of penalties close to the opponents line saw back row James Cryan have the confidence to take a quick tap and crash over for the fourth try and a guaranteed bonus point .Huss converting.

Yarnbury scored again with the try of the game sweeping the ball out wide left and great interpassing down the field to outwit the defence and winger Jack Brown on the end of the move for his hat-trick and Yarnbury’s fifth try Huss again converting. All credit to Goole a fit side who kept going and contributed to an entertaining game appreciated by a large crowd. They scored two tries late on after Yarnbury were down to fourteen men with the sin-binning of second row Adam Bateson.Goole scorers were wing Sam Smith and flanker Robert Shand. With all the top teams in the division loosing Yarnbury sit proud on top of the division.
