match report by John Rawson

Roundhegians 25 – 19 Yarnbury – Yorks 2 League

Having lost influential centre James White with a head knock last week and also prop Lewis Atha Yarnbury needed to reorganise their squad for the visit across Leeds to Roundhegians.John Dodgson starting for Atha in the front row and Graham Maycock moving inside for White and Josh Bateson returning on the left wing after a month out of action. The bench looked strong with James Cyan back from the antipodes and Joe Bennett drafted in for some muscle of the bench for his second start of the season. Improving Alex Crowther retaining his place deservedly on the bench making up the eighteen.

Roundhegians have run into some form recently having won three on the bounce whereas Yarnbury have got into a loosing habit recently with their last three games.

Yarnbury took control of the first quarter through the forwards and had field positionn in the main but although they were close to the home side try line a couple of chances were spawned with good defence from Roundhegians before the backs moved quick ball right to create a running chance for winger Jack Brown who hugged the try line to get over in the corner for the first score for an unconverted try.Stand Off Danny Pound missing the conversion.Roundhegians were struggling to mount pressure in the Yarnbury half at this time but eventually got a simple penalty converted from scrum Half Harry Wollaston. As Roundhegians came more into the game they were able to force the Horsforth side back through the strong boot of their stand off James Dobson and finally with quick ball down the right got full back Jonny Thorpe into the line on the overlap to score. The home side repeated the dose when Yarnbury were down a man with a yellow card surprisinglyyy for left wing Josh Bateson for kicking the ball in a ruck in the middle of the park. Thorpe going over wide right.

Yarnbury were well in the game and after repeated attacks down the middle mainly through the hard work of the forwards influential No8 for ‘hegians Dave Wilson was carded for persistently killing the ball.Yarnbury saw their chance and kept the pressure on the home line with persistent scrummaging and on the third attempt drove the home pack over the line for No8 Martin Rainey to touch down and this time stand off Pound made no mistake with the concversion to turn around 13-12 down in a close encounter.

The second half became an even contest before Roundhegians broke down the right with Bateson in the bin for centre Elliot Jackson to squeeze past the cover diving over low in the right hand corner for an unconverted try.Yarnbury were winning good ball at the set pieces but their movement of the ball across the park was somewhat predictable and was either foiled by the home defence or over elaboration with the ball came to nothing whilst the home side took their chances on the breakout with hooker Henry Wareham going over for Roundhegians final try before Yarnbury finally got a try through Graham Maycock after back row Jimmy Cryan broke the line in midfield and Maycock supporting touched down before Roundhegians kept the pressure on to deny Yarnbury a win in a close and exiting game.
