match report by John Rawson

Goole 5 – 12 Yarnbury - Yorkshire 2 League

80 – Joe Pinnick try scorer
Yarnbury were able to call on an unchanged team apart from hooker Chris Doyle but had experienced Tom Gilcrist able to come in.The bench also had Pete Tennant as the replacement prop and Les Crowther (back) and Paul Kernick (forward) subs so the team had a settled look following on from their emphatic win last week at home to another top three side With.Goole were flying even higher as the top side and narrowly won at Horsforth in the first half of the season but Yarnbury are beginning to show some form now selection is settling down and players are regularly available.

The conditions were Arctic at Goole last year but this time the winds were strong down the pitch but the temperature somewhat warmer than the previous season.Nevertheless,Yarnbury were facing a formidable head wind for forty minutes and were expecting to be camped on the defensive duties and so it turned out.

Goole attacked down the centre of the field through their forwards and Yarnbury showed their defensive strengths holding up the Goole forwards even when they managed to get near the line the defensive abilities held up Goole prop Ryan Lamb with a great try saving tackle getting under the player to stop the touch down from Centre James Endersby. The home forwards were insisting on running straight lines into the Yarnbury pack and were gobbled up to stop the threat .Stand Off for Goole had a penalty chance but the wind stopped the conversion and won that contest.

Yarnbury managed to break out of defense through their backs down the blind side but the final pass to winger Josh Bell was forward when the line was beckoning.A warning for the home side which went unheeded in the second half.Goole had another penalty near the end of the half but committed to a five metre line but this was repelled in fine style by the Yarnbury pack and the line relieved.

With the strong wind in their favour in the second half Yarnbury were looking to continue in the same confident manner but as so often happens the opposite happens.Goole stung by their failures to score in the first half attacked in earnest and got the ball out to left winger Luke Beecher after repeated carries through the pack attacked the Yarnbury 25 metre line. The winger had a tight space to work in but brushed off two tacklers and got over in the corner for the first try to the home side not converted in the wind by the stand off Rhys Moore.

Yarnbury were not phased by the eventual first score from the League leaders and continued to defend their line and ran the ball back confidently through their full back and wing combinations where they found space to run through the initial pace of Will Marshall breaking the defensive line and with winger Joe Pinnick elusive in support scored out on the right withe the home defence spread and then rubbed it in with a supurb conversion from the touchline in the swirling conditions a valuable extra two points. The game continued in the same vain .Goole pressing through their pack and not daring to kick out of defence but good tackling in defence continue to force errors and Yarnbury always looked dangerous on the break through their backs.
Good passing down the left made good ground and the ball went outside and then came back in for centre James Enderby to take the final pass and touch down giving the Horsforth side a seven point cushion which they protected in earnest to the end for a deserved win to topple the league leaders in front of their partisan crowd.A second win this year to move Yarnbury up to miss table and with returning experienced players expected for the next game the second team will be strengthened.

The pack, with Ian Maycock filling in at No8 young back rowers in Calum Fawcett and George Bowen forming a settled back row and second rowers James Falgate and Tom Golthorpe running hard ably supported by Paul Kernick and the props Richard Lister ,John Dodgson and Pete Tennant interchanging gives Yarnbury Coach Bob Hood plenty of options for the next two games at Home against Wheatley Hills and Ripon to ensure an impressive march up the table.
