match report by John Rawson

West Park 33 – Yarnbury 41 – Yorkshire 2 League

Make no mistake about this result for 80 minutes Yarnbury were dominant highlighted by their forwards who totally dominated the West Park eight.Scoring 41 points against 12.It was only in 13 minutes extra time with the game won Park salvaged a bonus point which should earn them another season in Yorkshire two.

The highlight was a hat trick for left wing Graham Maycock and a crash over from close in for his brother Ian but the plaudits were for the whole team effort as the Horsforth side romped away with seven tries .Remarkably, with so many senior players missing with three in the backs ,Captain James White ,James Endersby and Josh White and in the forwards James Falgate ,Chris Doyle and James Cryan. The hornets players did not fill in but added to the team spirit engendered by coaches Bob Hood,Gary Walker and Tom Gilcrist.

Yarnbury kicked off down the slope and were soon in front with space out wide left for Graham Maycock to finish of a standard move on the left as the Park defence were outflanked and stand off Marshall slotted the conversion. From the first scrum the home side eight were just overpowered and put Yarnbury on the front foot further tries followed as Park failed to stop the Yarnbury pack making yardage down the field.Maycock went in again for a second and Tom Goldthorpe picked up from a dominant scrum to make the line from 5 metres shrugging off defenders and then Ian Maycock did the same after several pick and goes.Marshall converting both tries. The referee then gave a penalty try under the posts for another seven points while in between Park managed to get their hands on the ball for two well worked tries from their backs well marshalled by stand off Calum Smithson with winger Gareth Geoffreys and full back ex Yarnbury Jack Brown going in for tries for Smithson to convert one.The half time score of 31-12 left Park staring down the barrel of another worrying defeat.

The second half up the slope was a closer affair but Yarnbury stretched the defence left and right with Maycock going in on the left following an astute kick to the line by Will Marshall after Joe Pinnick scorched up the right to extend their lead and move out of sight of their opponents .Both tries unconverted. To West Park credit they scored late on to take a single precious
bonus point when both sides were reduced to fourteen men which could help them avoid relegation but the dominance was with the Horsforth side in this local derby .

Yarnbury have Wetherby at home next Saurday for their final league game of he season.
