Yarnbury 15 - 35 Roundhegians - Yorks 2 League
Yarnbury were missing the pace of Josh Bateson on the left wing injured last week but his replacement Alfie Evans was a more than capable debutant. Also returning was Jack Brown at Full Back being prominent with his use of the ball in recent weeks. The rest of the squad was the same as played last week with the exception of forward replacement James Daffern on the bench. In a competitive game at Brownberrie Lane the League Leaders came away with five tries and a convincing win on paper but the result did not indicate how even this contest was particularly on chances missed Yarnbury did enough to win two games but not converting opportunities in to tries means another opportunity lost.
The first exchanges were even for both sides with Yarnbury making ground down the left getting Alfie Evans in to the game early but the opponents shutting out several attacks before they went down the other end after 10 minutes and stand off James Dobson dummied and used his bulk to go over.Full back Dave Jones converting.Yarnbury responded well and were having an equal share of the game and a goods backs move got winger Evans away down the left but the defence just managed to avert the try scoring opportunity. The left winger made no mistake with his next opportunity outstripping the cover to score but stand off George Oldridge could not convert from wide left.
Dave Gregory was sin binned for the opponents on 22 minutes for a high tackle but Yarnbury could not put pressure in to points and Roundhegians took a chance to score when Henry Wareham charged down full back Oldridge kick which sat inviting in the in goal area.Jone again converting. The home side were making good ground down the middle of the park through their forwards George Bowen,James Falgate and Alex Crowther punching holes in the opponents defence but no points were forthcoming. To 'rub salt in to the Yarnbury wounds' roundhegians counter attacked and got winger Elliot Jackson scored on the right near the break and Jones Converted to give the opponents a healthy lead at the break 21-5.
Yarnbury came in to the second half with an bang pushing back the opponents in to their 22 metre area. The forwards getting on top and sub scrum half Daniel Pound was the quickest to react from a tap penalty to go over soon after the turn around for an unconverted try.Yarnbury were determined to crack on and get something from the game their play warranted but were unable to convert good opportunities down the flanks, firstly down the left with Alfie Evans forced in to touch inches from the line then Josh Bell made good ground but the final pass went astray.Even with the pack in the ascendancy on the five metre line three pushover tries went begging as the ball squirmed out backwards from the scrum on two occasions and the third seemed to get kicked forward through the scrum.Yarnbury were trying everything to score but were coming up short at the last pass.Roundhegians back row Dave Gregory punished the home side intercepting the scrum half pass from a home side line out to go under the posts unopposed. Jones converting to stretch the away side lead.Soul destroying for all the Yarnbury efforts.
George Oldridge then finally got on the score sheet following a charge down as Yarnbury once again put pressure on their opponents only to loose the ball at the death trying to create an opening for their fourth try in a vain attempt to get a loosing bonus point.Even this came to nothing as susbstitute centre Euan Cameron scored from close in Jones again converting.Small margins between the teams but Hegians took what was offered and Yarnbury did not.
