match report by John Rawson

North Ribbledsdale 30 - 39 Yarnbury Yorks 2 League

Yarnbury usually get very little on their visit to Settle against their old foe's North Ribblesdale but were in need of a five point win after throwing away points from the start of the season playing their fast intensive flowing game. However, they needed to keep the ball in hand and convert possession in to tries for this encounter. The first play from the opponents kick offf was not covered and gave the home side the advantage of good field position and after solid defence the home side started with a seven point lead after a pushover try between the posts and conversion by stand off Mick Twaite.Yarnbury responded well and took control for the rest of the quarter Josh Bateson going through a gasp in centre field only to losse control of the ball before a good forward rush and inter passing put wing forward George Bowen in to space to score on the right but stand off George Oldridge missed from close in.

Yarnbury backs were looking dangerous on the break and Captain James White went through a gap only for the final pass going to ground.Yarnbury persisted running the ball and when winger Josh Bell came in to the line to make the extra man gave his opposite number Josh Bateson room to use his speed and he outflanked the defence to score Yarnbury's second try under the sticks from where Oldridge made the conversion.Unfortunately,Yarnbury were penalised for coming in to the side at a ruck and Twaite added the penalty to even the score but Yarnbury were not deterred up the slope and scored a supurb team try running the ball the length of the field putting Bateson away for his second try under the posts for a third and converted try.

The forwards were working hard in the set pieces and in defence to repel the Noth Ribbelsdale pack who used their strength in controllong the ball and making ground but Tom Warriner made a supurb turnover to stop the latest attack before another penalty to the home side reduced the arrears through Twaite.HT 13-17 to the Horsforth side .

Alex Bennett replaced the injured but impressive Warriner at the break and Yarnbury had the slope in the second half but it did not help initially as Twaite reduced the arrears to one point with yet another penalty infringement.Yarnbury pressed again and secured their fourth try and a bonus point when prop Lewis Atha charged down a clearence kick.Oldridge could not convert.Yarnbury then went on to dominate the game and scored two further tries .Ribblesdale just could not cope with the pace of Josh Bateson who in space in his own half went directly for th posts dancing round several defenders for a try .Oldridge converting. The stand Off then took the opportunity of a penalty under the sticks to further increase the lead before the forwards got in on the act after a barn storming run by second row James Falgate softened up the home side .Inter passing in midfield was finished off by the supporting George Oldride doing a flankers duty getting on the end of a pass and scoring the sixth try to put Yarnbury out of site and a five point win.

North Ribblesdale never gave up and scored a pushover try and and No8 Richard Wood managed to get the ball on the line after several pick and goes both converted by Twaite to make the score respectable as Yarnbury relaxed in the knowledge they had secured a five point win.
