Match Report By John Riley

Leeds Corinthians 33 pts Yarnbury 5 pts.

After last weeks superb performance against Wetherby Yarnbury gave their worst display of the season against a fired up Corinthians side determined to prove they belong in Yorkshire 2.
Corinthians play in the heart of rugby league territory and always play in the League style due to the preponderance of dual code players in their side.
Yarnbury arrived with seven regulars missing most of them enjoying a day out at Twickenham and things got worse even before the kick off when centre Graham Maycock was delayed at work meaning promotion from the bench for debutant Peter Macarthy.

Straight from the kick off Yarnbury pressured the Corinthians line only to lose the ball in the tackle on four successive drives.
Corinthians were bullying Yarnbury’s runners and after yet another turnover their left wing broke out of defence to race to within 10 metres of the Yarnbury line. Yarnbury were caught offside and Corinthians converted the penalty for a 3 point lead.

Yarnbury once again returned to the attack, hitting back with a try in the corner for skipper Charles Lang to take a 5 point to 3 point lead .
However instead of this being a platform for victory Yarnbury’s performance went down hill.
Ball carriers continued to go into contact too high, Corinthians continued to break out of defence with pacey counter attacks and deep into first half injury time they took the lead with another
penalty. Half time 6 pts to 5 pts.

In an effort to find more aggression Yarnbury emptied the bench hoping for a second half improvement. Alas Yarnbury’s efforts were blunted on a rock solid defence and a Corinthians back line more than competent with the boot as well as ball in hand.
A converted try shortly after half time put Corinthians firmly in the driving seat and although
Yarnbury spent a reasonable amount of time in the Corinthians half they never looked like scoring.

Although Corinthians extended their lead to 28 points to 5 points going into injury time. an additional try added to Yarnbury’s embarrassment as the home pack drove the visitors over their own try line.

For next weeks game versus undefeated league leaders Keighley Yarnbury will need to reset and learn from this defeat.
