At 12.30pm on Saturday the bugler played the Last Post and Yarnbury remembered their war dead. Each one of the fallen individually identified by name, rank and company by members of the 1st XV squad.
Later those same players produced a defiant
performance of grit and determination in a display of ‘they shall not pass’ mentality.
Wetherby arrived at Yarnbury having climbed into second place in the league on the back of averaging 32 points a game; they were odds on favourites according to the pundits.
Yarnbury once again upset the odds.
For the past four games Yarnbury have come from behind at half time but after 15 minutes of midfield stalemate a fine kick to the corner from stand in fly half George Oldridge gave Yarnbury position deep in the Wetherby ‘22’.
Wetherby overthrew the line out and Yarnbury skipper James Laing poached the tap down to score in the corner. Oldridge’s
attempted conversion drifting wide.
Wetherby responded with continuous driving from there large pack intermingled with strong running from their pacey outside backs. Yarnbury’s defence was resolute with superb cover tackling from the back row of Fawcett, Bennett and Robinson and pressure on the Wetherby centres led to wing Tom Bowman intercepting on the halfway line and racing away to score stretching out of a last ditch tackle to place the ball on the line.Once again the try went unconverted.
Yarnbury were now playing some lovely running rugby and should have scored at least once more before Wetherby hit back.
Oldridge’s speculative miss out pass being read superbly by the teenage Wetherby winger who’s lightning pace took him over the try line at the expense of a pulled hamstring.
Wetherby’s giant pack were now making inroads and with the Yarnbury scrum going backwards pressure finally told and following a driving maul their reward was an equalising try. Half time 10 pts each.
Within minutes of the second half starting the hard hitting tackles we’re taking their toll on the bigger Wetherby forwards and two more casualties emptied their bench.
Suddenly with a change of tactics Yarnbury we’re in the ascendancy Oldridge’s boot causing mayhem in the Wetherby back three and Yarnbury were only denied tries on three occasions due to knock ons prior to touching down.
With the visitors fitness waning Yarnbury went ahead in fortunate circumstances. Oldridge’s kick through taking a massive deflection off a Wetherby leg and outstanding centre Josh Bell scooping up the loose ball to wrong foot three defenders to score for Oldridge to convert.
Wetherby immediately pressured Yarnbury’s
‘22’ but with the help of a couple of relieving penalties and a magnificent strip in the tackle by Tom Whitfield Yarnbury regained the ascendancy.
With ten minutes to go Yarnbury were awarded a scrum about 40 metres out and with a quick pick up, a show and go down the blind side and a surprising turn of pace Number 8 Ben Robinson joyously rounded the full back to score a marvellous individual try. The bonus point was secured and Oldridge added the extras.
This was an outstanding team performance by a Yarnbury side who play as a team united by their coaches.
The back row never stop tackling the props although outweighed and outsized battle to the final whistle (non more than Dom Goldthorpe and Tom Whitfield ), however for his magnificent display of classic low tackling and eye for the break Yarnbury’s man of the match went to centre Josh Bell.
