York 20 – 20 Yarnbury

Yarnbury are sitting pretty in third spot in the league after 5 games and visited their nearest rivals currently in fourth. Not so many backwords for this away fixture unluckily a re-arrangement in the back row was necessary due to influential number 8 Jimmy Cryan still unfit so captain and scrum half Oliver Cashman went into the back row and scrum half Nathan Benton was drafted into the number nine slot. The tie also was well supported from Horsforth as Benton’s opposite number for York was Toby Atkin the York St John’s student and former Yarnbury junior and colts player.

Yarnbury got off to a sensational start from the kick off attacking the York line through the forwards and backs and moved the ball first left and then right from a ruck to release full back Stuart Wilson after good yards from number eight James Barrett to score at the posts and Carl Paterson converting.

Yarnbury then entered a sloppy period throughout the first half where possession was scarce due to knock on’s,offsides and charged down kicks so could not continue the momentum but worst of all allowed York into the game.during these twenty minutes or so the defence in the forwards and backs was excellent and all York had to show for a great deal of ball was a solitary George Davies penalty for the York wing.Referee Calvin Pender from Pontefract penalised the Yarnbury backs on half a dozen occasions for stepping offside but never the opposition which stymied the Yarnbury attacking effort and it was no suprise when York took the lead breaking out of defence down the right wing for full back Alex Nickson to score near the posts and Nickson to convert. A Yarnbury attack soon after gave Paterson the chance to draw level with a penalty through stand off Carl Paterson .Half time 10 – 10.This was a period when they were down to ten men due to Captain Oliver Cashman being sin binned for offside.

The third quarter was a stalemate for both sides with no points scored defences on top but Yarnbury pack looked impressive particularly number 8 James Barrett and second row Henry Griffiths made hard yards and in the scrum the props Adam Pike and Richard Lister provided a solid platform to control the ball.York then took the lead through another break out wide full back Alex Nickson scoring and Davies converting which seemed unfair on the Horsforth side who continued to probe for scores. However, the final quarter was mainly all Yarnbury on attack but one could see an unexpected defeat when left winger Elis Gomersall got over and looked to have scored but the ref was unsighted and no try given .Right winger Lee Mortimer was then given a chance from quick ball and made the line under the defence for a good score but replacement stand off Oliver Hardaker could not convert from the touch line and then missed an easier chance with a penalty to give Yarnbury the lead.

Not to be held back Yarnbury scored again to take the lead this time winger Elis Gomersall touching down after a strong run down the left following good work from centre’s Jason Avison and Ben Horner. Again Hardaker missing the conversion. For the last ten minutes experienced stand off Carl Paterson came back on to steady the ship and Yarnbury nearly saw out a good away win when all else in the league could not manage away from home but were extremely unlucky with a decision on time when an excellent typical strong tackle from Ben Horner stripped the ball from his attacking opposite number and laid the ball back for the defence only to be penalised Davies adding the score to draw the contest and retain the status quo.
