Yarnbury impressive home run continues...

Match Report by John Rawson..

Yarnbury without a game last week after the North Ribblesdale postponement were eager to get back on the park to continue their remarkable league form at home having not lost a league game for over a year. For this match Toby Brown continued his good form at prop with a start and the rest of the pack had a familiar look about it for this competitive match against a bogey side for Yarnbury over the years. The backs again had changes with centre Jason Avison out injured James Myerscough was into the centre alongside Ben Horner and Alex Clarke and Rob Rigby made up the flanks with versatile Lee Mortimer at his favoured position of Full Back. However, the key to this game would be the kicking duel between the experienced Glen Boyd for Pontefract and the young pretender for Yarnbury Olli Hardacker.

Pontefract play with a typical physical approach to the game to the game and the pack needed to be fully committed from the off in their first half battler for supremacy. Pontefract had the wind and Yarnbury had to defend long kicks from Boyd but with their first surge into opposition territory a forwrd infringement gave Olli Hardacker the first score a penalty close in. Yarnbury then gave Liam Kay the Pontefract wing a chance to level from killing the ball which was missed but not learning from the offence gave another straight away and the winger duly obliged.

Yarnbury then scored the first try with a catch and drive to split apart the Pontefract pack for No8 James Barrett claiming the touch down and Hardacker adding the extra’s. Pontefract then had a good passage of possession and when Yarnbury knocked on a speculative kick in their 22 metre area Pontefract swept left making an overlap for winger Jordan Gill to score and Kaye to convert to give the away side a one point lead.Yarnbury pack responded and wing forward Jimmy Cryan charged over in athletic style the Pontefract defence not able to stop his strength at the touch down to regain the lead for the Horsforth side at half time.

The second half saw Yarnbury take control in impressive fashion with the pack magnificent and the back row dominating in attack and defence. With Jimmy Cryan and Joe Bennett making hard yards and Henry Griffiths not only winning his lineout ball but disrupting the visitors attempts. Yarnbury attacked the Pontefract line with gusto. Firstly Jimmy Cryan stole out of a ruck and charged for the line for his second try and then winger Rob Rigby with his pace skipped around the defence to score the fourth and bonus point try and then to rub it in against a dismayed Pontefract side a training ground move off the top of a line out taken cleanly by James Barrett for hooker Tom Gilcrist to charge away unopposed for the fifth try. In between stand Off Olly Hardaker slotted one conversion and a penalty.

On this form Yarnbury can beat anybody in the division at home but away they need to pick up some points to maintain their top four position. Even so as a side are looking impressive.

On a day when the 2nds and 3rds fell foul to the weather Yarnbury fourth side The Nomads managed a good win against Selby 3rds 38-17. Bolstered by several third team players they managed six tries four converted by Will Marshall.
