Yarnbury 5 v Doncaster Phoenix 50

match report by John Rawson

Yarnbury took the field against the runaway league leaders without influential captain Oliver Cashman, stand off Carl Patterson and second row Ian Maycock who was injured in the previous weeks clash at Bridlington.James Barratt deputised as captain the ever reliable Steven Riley took the number ten shirt and Greg Trencher started in the second row.

The game started brightly for the home side who pressured the visitors in their own 22 meter area and even took a scrum against the head on 3 minutes, things were looking good for the Horsforth men, but with six minutes gone a loose pass was snapped up by the Donny defence and an 60 meter breakout led to a try by Centre Tom Battye. Not to be outdone 2 minutes later Yarnbury bagged a try of their own, superb handling by the backs saw Ellis Gomersall burst down his wing and score in the corner. All square and less than 10 minutes on the clock.

Both sides spent the next quarter hour searching for the gaps but stalwart tackling and astute kicking denied either side any scoring opportunities.A lineout close to the home try line led to catch and drive by the Donny pack but the defence held until the ball squirted out of the maul which was snapped up by prop Tom Bagnall who plunged over from short range, Dan Storey added the extras. On 25 minutes a flowing backs move by Doncaster led to a fine try by the the supporting fullback Craig Deakin.A short stocky full back coming into the line with good hands the best in the league.

Yarnbury were now faced with a side who were growing in confidence and for the rest of the half they contained Doncaster with a display of tackling that bordered on the heroic.Half time 5 –17 and both sides in the game.

The second half was 10 minutes old when Doncaster secured their next score, flanker Ryan Peacey making the line after another display of close support and aggressive driving mauls.Bonus point secured.

Five minutes later Donny scored again, a scrum 30 meters out saw a break by the back row who gave a demonstration of close support play which led to a try by open side flanker Ben Hyde. Dan Storey added the extras.

Yarnbury lost Jimmy Cryan on 65 minutes to a yellow card for a technical offence which gave Doncaster a lot of space to exploit their pace and power. On 68 minutes Yarnbury’s disrupted scrum could not cope with the visitors eight who provided clean ball for centre Andy Ellis to score, Dan Storey again adding the extras.Doncaster continued to apply pressure throughout the final 10 minutes and this led to tries by prop JoeLowcock and with the last move of the match his front row partner Andy Fraser completed the scoring.

After a promising start Yarnbury were ground down by the unbeaten visitors who have romped through the league this season with their mix of very experienced ex Doncaster Knights players and keen youngsters. The home side can be proud of the courage and commitment they showed in the face of daunting opposition but Doncaster are runaway leaders of the premier Yorkshire League and Yarnbury will be looking to regroup and get injured players on the field for the rest of the season.
