The game couldn’t have started any better for Sheffield. From their kick off, Yarnbury knock on and they recover the ball. A missed tackle in centre field in the next phase of play sees Sheffield score under the posts with a simple conversion. Yarnbury 0-7 Sheffield.

Yarnbury start to gain possession and slowly begin to make territorial gains. This is aided when Sheffield are penalised for a high tackle leading to a kick to touch for a 5m lineout. This is quickly followed by another penalty for side entry at the breakdown, again kicked for a 5m lineout. However, at both lineouts, despite good lift and catches, Sheffield are able to easily disrupt play before the maul has formed. Yarnbury possession continues but they are unable to take any advantage and are tackled into touch when the ball is moved wide. Conversely, from the Sheffield lineout just in their 22, they make a decisive break taking play deep into the Yarnbury half, the second phase sees them nearly score in the corner with the third phase being a cross kick from which they eventually score. The conversion is completed and Sheffield lead 0-14 after 14 minutes.

The rest of the half continues in a similar fashion with a fair amount of possession for Yarnbury but they make few inroads. The half chances Yarnbury do create come from a break by Keenan Dyer Dixon that ends with the ball being stripped by the covering tackler, a grubber kick behind the defensive line that is chased down by Jacob Rawson and James Longhawn but the bounce alludes both and James Longhawn making a mazy, side stepping run that ends with a potential high tackle that is not penalised but the ball is then lost at the ensuing breakdown. Defensively, there are too many missed or half tackles so that Sheffield are always on the front foot. There is some good tackling at the gain line by Sam Brown and a couple of last ditch tackles by Keenan Dyer Dixon that ensure that no further points are scored. Half time Yarnbury 0-14 Sheffield.

Substitutions are made at half time to allow a couple of Yarnbury players to provide cover for the U18s match kicking off straight after this match. An early Sheffield attack is stopped by a high tackle into touch near the Yarnbury 22 line by Edward Green. Sheffield kick for a 5m lineout but the throw to the front of the line is adjudged to not have been thrown 5m. The free kick is kicked to touch but from the resulting lineout Sheffield attack through their centres, break through the defensive line and score next to the posts. The conversion is completed and after 8 minutes of the second half Sheffield extend their lead to 21. A few minutes later Sheffield try to attack from their 22 but the ball is stripped in the tackle and Yarnbury secure possession. However, with an overlap out wide, the pass to Alex Koppany is poor and he unfortunately knocks on.

Any hopes of a meaningful contest are put to bed in an 8 minute spell that sees Sheffield score three more unanswered tries. The first sees a chip over the defensive line caught by the same player with momentum taking them over the try line. The second results from a missed tackle in centre field and the third sees some good off-loading between the Sheffield forwards to score under the posts. One conversion is missed for Sheffield to extend their lead to 40 unanswered points.

With 10 minutes to go Sheffield are attacking again when Alex Koppany pounces on a loose pass and runs half the length of the pitch to score under the posts. Maxwell Lee completes the conversion. The final passages of play see Sheffield attacking again but the ball is turned over by Yarnbury near the try line and Sheffield are adjudged to be offside when they block the clearance kick. The full time whistle blows; Yarnbury 7-42 Sheffield.

Now if we can just bat out the day and save the Ashes ……
