Yarnbury under 8 Stalwarts battle to victory

So it starts, the bleak cold rainy autumn descends upon the Yarnbury U8 massive.

Parents and children rolled up with the usual sense of apprehension and tension curbed with delight at the prospect of a challenging derby encounter.

The opposition turned up boasting a 1st team player as coach greeted by his chocolate kneed Yarnbury counterpart. The greeting although cordial was underpinned by the competitive nature of this fixture.
Some normal in house rough housing during warm up indicated the boys were ready for the days contest, then the morning was paused for a poignant 2 minutes commemoration silence = well respected by all juniors and parents alike.
A round robin of matches was set up with parent Wade male holding the time keeping duties at the simultaneous kick off of the first two contests. Like a Mexican stand-off at the end of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti western, the lads were motionless yet taught as coiled springs as the whistles blew and both games were underway.
Alex Lydon supervising, was limping along the muddy touchline watching anxiously to see if his lads had been paying attention throughout the previous weeks training session. He was paid back in spades – excellent ball handling skills coupled with close support and selfless passing resulted in Yarnbury strolling away clear visitors from the day’s efforts. Not something we usually concentrate on but the competition was obvious today and winning was clearly on both team’s minds.
Excellent tag lifting was clouded a little by some overzealous halting of the opponents in order to gain purchase on said tags. The refs made a good stab at policing the tackling tactics but suffice to say that this highly skilled group of little rugby stars will face no obstacle when full contact enters the picture next year.
Tom Russell clocked into gear immediately obviously keen to impress the grandparents picking up the ball early to streak way from the chasing pack to triumph in the corner with his usual understated and gentlemanly celebration.
The future monsters of this age group piled through with direct fearless penetrating runs – Leon Partington and Evan Wade breaking formation only when forcing unseen cracks in the oppositions defensive line and striding home comfortably on a couple of occasion endorsing this writer’s assumption that both on the back row, they will both become very useful big old units in years to come.
Aussie , the head , Lydon bounced many of the Aireborough team backwards on contact and provided some perfect lay offs to Liam Ewan the pace master of the day.
Jem Cassani, Rory Donaldson, Ethan Kerr and Oliver Herring all placed their bids on the 10, 11, 12,13 and 14 jersey’s with passing jinking and support play up there with the near automaton perfection of an All Black three quarters line.
Particular mention goes out to the pairing of Curbison and Hillyard with formidable and tenacious stopping of large and determined foes. Enjoyed by everybody watching (both sets of parents), these two warriors not only ran in some skilful tries but tackled their eager little hearts out – impressive and encouraging.
All in all a victorious successful morning in the pouring muddy conditions with coaches Miles and Lydon strolling away with helds held hgh firm in the knowledge that the training is embedding into this talented set of individuals driving them closer to becoming the well drilled efficient machine that the knowledgeable crowd of supporter is demanding.

Great stuff lads – keep it up and thanks for all your efforts.
