A Game at last!

Despite the sunny yet bitterly cold weather Yarnbury entertained a visiting side from Keighley RFC in a hastily arranged fixture; Thanks for which go to Paul Marshall for putting in the effort to arrange fixtures for most of the junior sides.

The pitch was not in good condition upon arrival and the hope was that the morning sunshine, and not a little too much hot air from the Yarnbury coaches would soon get the pitch in fine fettle for the game. We needn't have worried, the players are made of much sterner stuff and were itching to get on with the game.

The game soon settled into its usual format with the ubiquitous Charley Popely racing up to the tag like an italian ship's captain deserting a sinking ship although not falling in the process. Upon the first of many turnovers Yarnbury attacked with ferocity and purpose to score a delightful try in the corner. The first half continued apace with Yarnbury racing into a 4-0 lead. The second half was less of a one-sided affair. Keighley rallied and reduced the lead to 4-3 with some excellent passing and making full use of the pitch. Yarnbury were quick to re-organise and steadied the defensive ship and managed to tag their way into much of the possession in the closing minutes. This possession gave the partisan crowd a masterclass display of mini rugby running, i.e. no passing whatsoever and a length of the pitch run with a few side steps for good measure. Marvellous.
