We were missing a couple of key players today, however the girls stepping up from the 2xi put in solid performances. The league is looking competitive already, so we need to make sure we continue picking up these wins

City of Portsmouth 2 v 6 Mens 1xi

Yateley Mens 1xi finally got their season up and running with a dominant display over lowly CoP. Chris Hedges bagged a brace, with other goals coming from Doug Joyce, Chris Hogg, Doug Clayton and Sam Edwards. Stand in captain Steve Maskell said: “We put the effort in from the off and got our rewards. We have been looking to assert ourselves from the start of games and this is exactly what we did. It was great to see Chris and Doug Clayton get amongst the goals in their first 1xi game of the season. We have a lot to do, but the attitude of the guys is great and therefore we will look to build on this result. Scoring 6 goals is always a delight, but the real delight was syncing up my phone to Piggy’s in car stereo on the way home. Away days will always be fun days.”

Ladies 1xi 3 – 0 Gosport
The Ladies 1xi continued their strong start to the season going beating bottom of the table Gosport 3-0. Ruth Sealey smashed in her first goal of the season from the top of the Dee, with Amiee Scullen and Jen Cornelius-Green scoring the other two. Jen Cornelius-Green commented: “We were missing a couple of key players today, however the girls stepping up from the 2xi put in solid performances. The league is looking competitive already, so we need to make sure we continue picking up these wins.”

Mens 2xi 4 – 1 Swanage & Wareham
The Mens 2xi also notched their first win of the season, seeing off Swanage & Wareham 1xi. Chris Ash picked up two goals, with the other two coming from youngsters Jake Smith and Shane Cresswell. 2xi Captain James Gaitskell commented: “It is great to get the win today, as we have been unlucky in our first two league games. It is great to see both Jake and Shane picking up goals. They have been excellent since they have come into the team and will be a big asset to the club in years to come”

Ladies 2xi 4 – 0 Winchester 3
2 home wins out of 2 for Ladies 2xi this season, with the ladies overcoming the Winchester with ease. Katie Jarvis picked up her first goal for YHC since her return to the club (maybe her first goal for the club?!). The other goals came from Jen Sweeney, Lauren Herring and Kate. Returning goal scorer Katie Jarvis commented: “It is great to be back at YHC. I can’t believe I left in the first place. Jayne’s teas need some work, but at the end of the day we won. Well done ladies”.

Mens 3xi 1 – 1 Soton Uni 3
Dave Woods led the side to another point, drawing 1 all with Soton Uni. It was a hard fought point against a very athletic university side. Stuart Brimble picked up the goal. Skipper Woodsy commented after the game: “Given the opposition had won their first two league games, we knew it would be a tough battle. On the face of it, a point each is a fair result. The team are looking forward to next week and are hoping to their first win of the season”

Ladies 3xi 1 – 2 US Portsmouth
The Ladies 3xi couldn’t overcome US Portsmouth, narrowing losing 2-1. Lucy Matthews scored Yateley’s only goal, moving her to 3 goals for the season…if only Fantasy Hockey was still running.

Mens 4xi 3 – 2 Tadley
The Mens 4xi picked up their first win of the against Tadley. Give Tadley are a 1xi, this is an impressive result. Goals courtesy of Kev Manning, Stew Borland and Hugo Sherlock Club stalwart Derek Craston said: “It is great to get a win today. I know the Mens section has had a difficult start to the season, so today’s result for the 4xi and the other Mens team is great news! Now, where is the bar??”

Ladies 4xi 2 – 12 New Forest 2
Lottie Mannion was the hero for the Ladies 4xi, picking up two goals in a very one sided contest.

Fleet & Ewshot 4 1 – 2 Mens 5xi
The Mens 5xi took the spoils in the derby day encounter with local rivals Fleet & Ewshot. ‘Born-again’ GK come CF Jon Webb grabbed the first goal, with Thomas Morgan notching the decider. Captain Matt Golightly said: “It was a great result today against a physical opposition. We have to make up some points already this season but I am confident we can get
