Match preview: Nuneaton Town vs Yaxley

Match preview: Nuneaton Town vs Yaxley

Dominic Paling24 Aug - 18:30

Yaxley travel to high flying Nuneaton as they return to league action.

Yaxley face Nuneaton on bank holiday Monday as they look to return to winning ways.

Team news
Yaxley got knocked out of the FA Vase yesterday on penalties, Jezz Goldson-Williams saw his penalty saved during the game and Frankie Webster's header took the game to penalties. It was a tough one to take for the Yaxley players however it is important they maintain their impressive form in the league. The last league game for Yaxley was a 1-0 win over Moulton and they will look to get another 3 points on the board against a tough opponent.

The opposition
Nuneaton are the table toppers of the division and remain undefeated, and are just one of two sides with a 100% win record in the league having played 5 games. They go into the game on the back of an 8-0 victory over Highgate United in the FA Vase so will be full of confidence and looking to maintain that 100% record. Kyle James Jardine already has 8 goals to his name in just 7 appearances this season and will be looking to add to the impressive tally.

Manager's comment
‘Yesterday’s FA Vase tie against Framlingham was a tough one to take. Cup football is all about fine margins, and unfortunately, we found ourselves on the wrong side of them.

We had the perfect chance to settle early when we were awarded a penalty just ten minutes in. Jezz Goldson-Williams stepped up with confidence, but their keeper pulled off the save. Moments like that can change the course of a game, and it gave Framlingham the lift they needed.

After an even first half, we let ourselves down with some sloppy defending on 55 minutes and went behind. To the lads’ credit, we never gave up. We pushed hard, created pressure, and with seconds left, Frankie Webster rose brilliantly at a corner to head us level. It finished 1–1 and went straight to penalties, where we came out the wrong side of a 4–3 shootout. A cruel way to exit the competition, but I couldn’t fault the fight and spirit shown to get back into the game.

Now our focus turns straight back to the league, and tomorrow brings a huge test away to Nuneaton. They’re top of the table, full of confidence after winning 8–0 yesterday, and the quick turnaround makes this an even bigger challenge for our young squad. But challenges like this are what we learn from. If we can take the resilience and togetherness we showed at Framlingham and apply it over 90 minutes, we’ll give ourselves a chance to compete.

Thank you, as always, for your support. It makes all the difference to the lads and staff, especially on weeks like this.’ -Wilks
