Daventry travel to the cuckoos on Saturday as Yaxley look to react to 6-1 defeat on Monday.
Team news
Yaxley were far from the usual standard on Monday as they lost 6-1 to table toppers Nuneaton. That's 2 defeats in a row for Yaxley and they will be looking to bounce back and hit a run a form, however Daventry sit second, so the fixture calendar is not on the Cuckoos side, however this is no excuse and they will feel they have a chance at home. In the defeat on Monday, captain Max Rigby was absent as Quincy Shorunmu stepped in. Herbie Hilliard grabbed the only goal for Yaxley.
The opposition
Daventry go into the game sitting in 2nd, winning 4 and losing 1. That one defeat came on Monday to Moulton 3-2 whom Yaxley previously beat 1-0 earlier this month. Daventry finished 8th last season, doing the double over Yaxley winning 1-0 and 3-1 so it will be a tough game for Yaxley and they have to be patient, and maybe they will take something away from the game.
Manager's comments
‘Monday’s trip to Nuneaton was always going to be one of the toughest fixtures of the season, and so it proved. They were far superior to us on the night and, in truth, they look every bit a side that should win this league with ease. In my view, they are the strongest team the UCL has seen in many years.
While the result wasn’t in our favour, I couldn’t fault our lads for their effort. This is a young group, and what pleased me most was that they never stopped battling, no matter the scoreline. These experiences — testing ourselves against the very best — are what help players grow. The lessons learnt in games like that will only benefit us as the season progresses.
We now turn our focus quickly to another tough challenge as we welcome Daventry Town. They’ve made no secret of their ambitions for promotion this year and have put together a strong squad capable of achieving it. Their mix of experience and quality means they will be a real test for us, and we know we’ll need to be organised, disciplined, and ready to compete from the first whistle.
For us, it’s about building on the positives we’ve shown in recent weeks — the resilience in draws against Easington and Histon, the hard-fought win over Moulton, and the fighting spirit at Framlingham. If we can combine that attitude with consistency over 90 minutes, we’ll give ourselves every chance of making life difficult for a good Daventry side.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. It makes a huge difference to the players, especially during this demanding run of fixtures.‘ -Wilks
