The first half was one of few chances as the two teams largely cancelled each other out and struggled to make the ball stick when they did break into the final third. Besides a few shots straight at Aaron Butcher, the first effort on target came in the 21st minute: a Shepshed free kick was headed goalwards, forcing Butcher to dive low and push the ball wide for a corner. At the other end, Yaxley's first shot on target came in the 32nd minute when John-Paul Duncliffe found acres of space to run on the right wing and shot from the edge of the box to force a save from Shepshed keeper Brandon Ganley.
Two minutes into the second half, Shepshed took the lead when Matt Melbourne headed in a cross at the far post. Yaxley almost equalised four minutes later, Connor Peters rising highest from a corner but heading his effort into the crossbar. This was followed by an extended period of Shepshed domination as they pushed for a second and Yaxley struggled to find any sort of out-ball to break through the press with. Time and time again, Yaxley cleared the ball upfield, Shepshed won it back and charged forward again and the Yaxley defence were called into action to scramble clear.
With ten minutes of the match left, Yaxley brought on Lewis Baughan and the youngster took just two minutes to help Yaxley equalise: after a rare spell of Yaxley pressure, Baughan played a clever dinked pass to Tom Waumsley, who controlled with his chest before turning and shooting on the volley between two defenders to score. After this, the match opened up a little as both teams pushed for a winner, but neither could produce a meaningful chance before full-time.
