Founded after a Facebook post on the Yaxley village page from founder member James Warrener who asked why there had never been a rugby team to represent that small corner of Cambridgeshire. It was read by Peterborough Rugby Club stalwart Andrew "Stan" Burgess and as a result the Yaks were born out of the existing RB Organic works team that played touch around the area.
Yaxley Yaks started that initial campaign playing friendlies including against the touch teams of both Saracens and Bath Rugby before knuckling down to take part in the competitive Peterborough summer touch league over a number of seasons. The best result as the Yaks was in the last summer played under that brand in 2022 where they lost out narrowly to Deeping in the grand final at the end of a great regular season.
They flew the flag for Yaxley with pride, training in the village and holding taster sessions such as one hosted at the 2018 Yaxley Festival where a number of new players were attracted to the team and the sport of touch.
During the Covid lockdown where across 2 seasons only 18 matches were able to be completed there was an offer of a permanent year round touch pitch from Peterborough Rugby Club and this was voted on by members.
Like many clubs, lockdown had drained the resources with the Yaxley 3g facility having to be paid for in advance meaning the Yaks lost out when not allowed to train there.
The vote was passed and for 2022 the club merged with Peterborough Touch, Orton
Ospreys, and Peterborough Tropics before moving into Peterborough Rugby Union club in the Fengate area of the city.
The new team played in DNTS and ERDS before joining the full NTS and getting promotion to division 2 at the end of the 2023 series.
However, a number of players moved on in the winter as that natural cycle ended and the team joined NTS in division 4 for this summer, fulfilling fixtures with a number of promising juniors.
As we enter the autumn and DNTS, a few regulars are back and the mix of the side now includes a little more experience. Our players are proving popular though (!) with Midlands Tigers representation across age grades again. Something we are very proud of.
So much has been achieved under the leadership of Chairman Alistair Dobson and his team of coaches and players. The club now run the successful touch league that had been their home for the first 5 years and continue to grow and promote the game in the area.
Here's to the next 250 matches! and massive thanks to all who have represented the team, supported us, driven players to matches and washed kit. We love our volunteers and really appreciate their efforts.
