2017 Season - A mixed bag

The start to the 2017 season has produced a mixed bag of results across the three Saturday teams with the unpredictable English summer weather playing its part in disrupting the steady progress of the cricket season.
1st XI
The 1st XI under the new captaincy of Sam Crompton started with a storming victory over local rivals Whitchurch CC with a 4 wicket win and maximum points. Dan Farnham produced an excellent 6-21 bowling return, restricting the home team to 185 all out. In reply the Bohos cruised to victory with two overs to spare with Cotts, Duran, Brainers and CV the main contributors with 43, 48, 26 & 33 respectively. 20 points obtained from our moorland neighbours.
Week 2 saw the weather intervene with Kenn CC winning on a faster run rate in a rain reduced match. Scoring 201 off 45 overs, Brainers being the star batsman with 83 and Christiaan (Sid) chipping in with a swift 35. When the rain finally called an end to proceedings Kenn had achieved enough to win on the run rate and YBCC had to settle for 7 bonus points.
Week 3 and the weather worsened. Match abandoned without play for a 6 point return.
Currently placed 4th on 33 points, and hoping the weather will allow an improved points return.
2nd XI
A tough start for the 2nd XI saw defeat at home against Ashburton CC, electing to field first, the Bohos restricted the visitors to 187 for 9 in their 45 overs with no batsman really getting away and wickets distributed amongst the bowling attack. Unfortunately the home side batting never ignited and eventually defeat by 94 runs was inevitable.
Week 2 and a trip to Brixham. Electing to bat this time and steady scoring with contributions from Cotts (12), Chets (40), Giles (47), Keeno 26 and Henry (29) resulted in a first innings total of 193 for 4 with a helpful extra column of 34. A steady fall of wickets became a deluge with the home side crumbling to 102 all out with BB (4-12) and Chets (3-24) the pick of the bowlers. Returning home with 19 points in the bag, an excellent away day to the coast.
Week 3 and as with the 1st XI. Rain stopped any play at a soggy Langton Park. 6 points each.
3rd XI
No game in week 1 so straight onto week 2
The Bohos elected to field against the Bovey Tracey 4th XI. who steadily compiled 188 for 9 off the allotted 45 overs with Gazza Hutchins and Josh Stevenson starring with the ball with 3-22 and 3-26 respectively. Once again the weather intervened to reduce the match and despite 43 from Jamie Wright and 23 from Sam Betts, a run rate defeat meant only 6 points were bagged.
Week 3
Whilst the 1st and 2nd XI took shelter from the rain, the 3rd XI headed to the brighter skies at Kenn and produced an astonishing performance. Electing to field first, star of the show Josh Stevenson produced figures of 7 overs, 5 maidens, 4 wickets for 2 runs (both wides!) to reduce the opposition to 0-3, continued tight bowling and wicket taking reduced the home team to 42 all out off 30.4 overs.
Not risking any weather related interruptions Jamie Cooper scored an unbeaten 33 with 3 4's and 3 6's to steer the Bohos to a 9 wicket victory in 11 overs.
An excellent result with great contributions from the youngsters.

So..... wins, defeats and abandonments all around with some sparkling individual performances mixed in. With improving weather hopefully league positions will be better reflected in cricket results and the three teams can climb their respective tables.

Encouraging start nevertheless and a basis for optimism for the season ahead.

On another note we have said farewell to Sam Betts, Steph Hutchins, Paul and Dan Farnham who are all trying pastures new. We wish them well with their endeavours with their new clubs and thank you for your contributions and efforts with YBCC. There will always be room at Langton Park in the future should you ever wish to return.
