Great win in League Cup dedicated to club legend

Before this cup tie with Premier Division Hellesdon, a minutes silence was impeccably observed in memory of club legend Peter Saunders who sadly passed away 2 weeks ago. Peter was an avid supporter of the club having previously played in goal in his younger days and will be hugely missed by all those who knew him.

Yelverton came into this game on the back of their first defeat of the season at Gorleston Reserves last week looking to reach the second round of this competition for the first time. Harvey Kerrigan earned his first start for a few weeks whilst Ewan Boulter started his first game for the First Team and Shaun Roberts returned after injury to replace Phil Coult who was getting married. Hellesdon started the better side and could have gone ahead had they taken advantage of a breakthrough in the Yelverton defence whilst Roberts produced a great save to push the ball onto the far post and away. Clarry had a half chance before Chris Hall reacted quickest to race clear and finish inside the back post. Yelverton doubled their lead 5 minutes before half time as Boulter got on the end of a great Pitchell cross from a corner to put the hosts in a great position going into the interval.

Hellesdon came out all guns blazing second half and got a goal back 10 minutes in as Yelverton failed to clear with the visitors no.9 lifting the ball over Roberts head leaving the GK with no chance. Yelverton were under the cosh after this but defended well with only a couple of shots from distance the notable efforts from Hellesdon. With 25 minutes left, Dan Cook got on the end of another great Pitchell delivery to give the hosts a 2 goal cushion once again before getting his second of the day with 10 minutes to go.

A great win and display all round from the Hoovers over opposition a league above on an emotional afternoon and with this victory will look to push on in this cup and try to get their hands on silverware for the first time since lifting the Division 6 title on their debut season in the Anglian Combination 9 years ago.

The Reserves unfortunately returned empty handed from their trip to East Harling Reserves in a 2-1 defeat with Lewis Page getting on the scoresheet.

The Sunday Side had a good 4-1 win over Salhouse Rovers this morning at the Garrick Field which saw them move up to 3rd in the league.
