Winning end to the season

Yoxford wrapped up their Covid-affected shortened season on Sunday with a 2 wicket win over Stradbroke at Grove Park.
Winning the toss and fielding first, opening bowlers Will Driver and Samuel Binks took a few overs to get into their stride. This allowed Stradbroke to make a decent start, scoring at 4 and a half runs a over before Will made the breakthrough in the 7th over with Hugman being caught at mid off by Tom Driver for 14 with the score on 31.
Change bowlers, Ben Aust and Mason Stacey were also slow to get going, and this saw Stradbroke race to 86-1 after 16 overs before Stacey found his line and length and had Wise caught behind by Jamie Thurston for 44. This wicket slowed the run rate up dramatically as Yoxford began to wrestle control of the innings. Aust and Stacey were now bowling accurately, and only 7 runs came off the next 7 overs. Stacey took his second wicket thanks to a good catch by Sam Mackay at Mid Wicket, before Aust cleaned bowled Flintoff for a duck in the next over to leave Stradbroke 97-4. Tom Driver was introduced to the attack and he too took a few overs to find his rhythm as he went for 42 off his first 4 overs. But the return of Will Driver saw him bowl successive wicket maidens to finish with 3-27 and Tom Driver then collected 3 wickets for 3 runs to finish figures of 3-45 and Stradbroke were bowled out for 169.
Jamie Thurston and Steve Brett opened the Yoxford reply, but Brett fell in the 4th over for 5. Ben Aust joined Thurston as the wicket and they found scoring hard thanks to accurate bowling from Cattermole and Gilbee. Ben than began to find his feet with successive fours, before Thurston eventually fell for 11 in the 18th over. Aust (25) and Charlie Throp then both fell in the next over to leave Yoxford on 52-4. Yoxford now knew a partnership was vital to restore their chances and, for a time it looked like Nigel Binks and Tom Driver would provide that stability as they put on 22 in good time before an eventful 23rd over looked to have put pay to Yoxford's chances. First, Binks was cleaned bowled for 21 off the first ball of the over. Four balls later, Mason Stacey was hit in the body by a rising ball and had to retire and from the very next ball, Sam Mackay was also bowled to leave the score 74-6. Will Driver joined his brother at the wicket and they batted sensibly together, rotating the strike and hitting the bad ball to the boundary. They put on 56 for the 7th wicket in 10 overs before Will was caught in the deep for 21. Mason returned to the crease and added a further 14 with Tom before he was bowled for 5 with the score now 144-8.
The result could now go either way, with 26 runs needed and two wickets left. Tom was now joined by Samuel Binks with Tom just 3 runs away from a maiden 50 in senior cricket. The two young players batted maturely to edge Yoxford towards the victory target. Tom reached a deserved half century and both batsmen picked the gaps and run well between the wickets to see the home side home with 10 balls to spare. Tom finishing 59 not out to end the season on a high.
