Basford host South Shields

By Neil McGowan

Basford United attempt to get the season back on track when in form South Shields visit Greenwich Avenue on Saturday (3pm).

The 8-3 defeat against Hyde last week stung the club and manager Martin Carruthers says change is in hand:
“We have signed Shaun Harrad from Matlock and aim to have another new player available for Saturday. These players will be a real boost to the whole squad and a real statement of intent that we will make the necessary changes where required to ensure we perform well week in week out.

“Jerry Nash, Liam Hearn and Courey Grantham will all train this week which is very good news for everyone and Jack Thomas is available again after suspension. Having these players available will provide us with real quality and strength going up against one of the best sides in the league.

“Deon Miekle and Greg Tempest are both moving on to Ilkeston and Matlock respectively and we thank them both for great service to the club and wish them all the best at their new clubs.

“We move on and there will be changes to the side this weekend after last Saturday’s freak result which was totally unacceptable.

“South Shields are a top side and their main threats come via Carl Finnigan and Lee Mason up top, Josh Gillies who plays as a number 10 and both full backs cause problems going forward.

“The lads are going to have to dig deep and give us a response after last Saturday and make it up to the fans and everyone involved in the football club. We will work hard this week and get back to basics and show that we are a good team and get the season back on track.

“We have some quality players but the message this week will be we will not hesitate to bring fresh blood and replace them if they let their standards slip below what is expected.

“Once again apologies to all the supporters for such a dismal display.”

This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.

Normal admission rates apply: Adults £9, Concessions £6, Under 16s £2, Family £15 (up to four people, max 2 adults, must include at least one under 16).
