Basford United 3 Belper Town 2

By Jonny Drake

Basford United return to winning ways as they edge out Belper Town 3-2 in the penultimate pre-season game.

Belper took the lead early when Danny South’s towering header found the back of the net.

As the first half progressed Basford created chances but were unable to convert any of them meaning they went in 1-0 down at halftime.

Eventually, Basford equalised as James Carvell netted from a tight angle however, Belper retook the lead through a Josh Law own goal not long after.

James Reid smashed home a penalty to make the score 2-2 with ten minutes remaining and in the 84th minute, Conor Green converted Law’s cross to score Basford’s winning goal.

Basford started the game slowly and Belper took full advantage, opening the scoring just 15 minutes into the game thanks to South’s strong header.

This woke Basford up and they began to work their way into the game. Liam Hearn took Basford’s first chance of the game as he fired a shot just wide of the Belper Town post with 20 minutes gone.

After another good Basford move, Jack Thomas was brought down in the box and Hearn stepped up to take the penalty. Ryan Musselwhite saved and follow up shots from Jack Thomas and Zak Goodson were blocked by Belper’s defensive heroics.

Dan Wallis pulled off a great save just before halftime to deny a header and to keep the score unchanged.

After halftime, Reid cracked a superb freekick against the bar and Nat Watson hit the side netting with a free kick of his own just one minute later.

Basford eventually got their equaliser in the 55th minute after a great run and finish from Carvell. The attacker danced through the Belper defence and drilled his shot home at a tight angle.

On the hour mark, Wallis produced another great stop to deny ex-Basford player Reece Bertram.

Belper retook the lead soon after. Law heading past his own goalkeeper after a miscommunication between the two.

As the game entered the last 20 minutes Wallis pulled off another great save and Basford continued to push for the equaliser. It was not long before their pressure was rewarded as Grantham was brought down in the box, earning Basford their second penalty of the game which was converted confidently by Reid.

With the game tied at 2-2 and just ten minutes left both sides were pushing for the win and fortunately, fate favoured Basford. Carvell slipped in Law who sent a pinpoint cross for Green to convert.
