Balcombe Vets 2 v BBH Vets 2 (BBH won 4-3 on pens)

Our veterans team progressed to the quarter finals of the Sussex FA Veterans Challenge Cup after a hard fought battle against Balcombe.

The game was switched to a 3G pitch at Hassocks following the recent wet weather but even then the game was in some doubt due to a morning snow flurry but thankfully the pitch was playable come kick off time.

A slow start saw the Vets go a goal behind but a critical substitution from manager Daecon Leggatt mid way through the first half saw Paul Lockyer introduced from the bench and within a minute we were level with Lockyer playing a vital role in fetching the ball from behind the goal for the corner from which James Bird scored with a far post header.

BBH played better in the second half before conceding a goal against the run of play which looked like being our undoing only for Jamie Fiveash to win a penalty in the last few minutes which was calmly despatched by Damian Francis to force a draw.

The result would be decided on penalties and Chris Polson made two great saves from Balcombe’s first two penalties to put BBH on the front foot. The glory was therefore in the hands of Lee Holtom as he stepped up to take the 4th penalty after successful conversions from James Bird, Damian Francis and Darren Young. Let’s just say that we are one match ball down as he not only failed to hit the target but cleared the surrounding fence. Fortunately, due to Polson’s earlier heroics, we still had one more chance for victory and fittingly manager Leggatt provided the killer blow to send us into the quarter finals of the County Cup where a tie against Lingfield or AC Azzurri awaits.
