Dropped catches proved costly today

“"We are an equal opportunity club"” Dan Valluvassery explaining GC batting collapses

Match report by Varad Haradikar

Gully cricketers hosted Waddington CC on Sunday 19/5/2019 at LCH grounds. Chirag won the toss for GC and elected to bat. Naren batted with gusto to score 68 off 66 balls on his birthday. From a position of strength at 122 for 1, there was a flurry of wickets after the fall of Naren, and GC were down to 151 for 8. At the other end, Chirag held fort with a patient 26 before he was out LBW. Then came one sweetly timed 6 from the bat of Sreedharan to the long off boundary, who along with Puneet brought about the rear guard fightback. They put on 28 for the last wicket. Puneet decided that he would score only boundaries on this day trying to replicate Hardik Pandya and scored 4 of them as the No.11 batsman. With 192 on the board, GC was confident they had enough runs to defend. James Wright took 4 wickets, while Amile Ratnasiri took 3 for Waddington CC.
When skipper Phil Dainty of Waddington CC was dismissed for only 4 runs at the start of the innings, GC could not have asked for a better start. Unfortunately rain disrupted play immediately thereafter. Both teams were keen for a result and decided to resume the game when rain stopped after 40 minutes. In gloomy conditions, the restriction for GC was that fast bowlers could not bowl at the resumption till the light improved. This handicap meant the use of new ball with swing in the overcast conditions was lost. For Waddington CC, there was a saviour in Amile Ratnasiri who was playing his first match for the club. He played resolutely albeit with a lot of luck when wickets fell around him. He was dropped thrice before he reached 50 and 4 times there-after to top score with 93 not out. This was costly for GC as they continued to get wickets at the other end regularly but Amile kept scoring at one end keeping the asking rate always in sight. A wet field and ball and not so good light made it challenging to take some of the difficult catches. Pravin bowled an inspiring spell and it was a pleasure to see the wickets flying off the ground when he clean bowled two batsmen. In the end, despite the best efforts of GC and what was looking like a close finish, Waddington CC won scoring 195 for 7 making it their first win for the season. Meanwhile, for GC, the hunt for the first Sunday league game win of the season continues.
