Montrose Rugby Achievement Program (RAP) Secondary School - 2023-24

The Rugby Achievement Programme (RAP) was set up in 2019 for S1 and S2 boys and girls at Montrose Academy, in partnership with Montrose Rugby Club and Scottish Rugby .
The sessions are led by club coaches and two teachers from Montrose Academy. The aim is to give young people an opportunity to try a new sport and build their confidence using rugby as well as an increased opportunity to offer wider achievement to pupils (a key component of Curriculum for Excellence) and an opportunity for staff to further build on positive relationships with pupils.

The programme has already supported some pupils who struggled with engagement in ‘mainstream’ classes and was attended by one pupil who was not mainstream for any other classes – this opportunity was a real benefit for the pupil.

We introduce rugby values respect, leadership, engagement, achievement, and teamwork to all pupils and gave pupils a chance to represent their school in fixtures. Each pupil has a log book to fill in each session with goals and aims and self reflection. They are all given a tshirt and training top and gumshield to keep .This helps with the sense of belonging to a team.

Following on from the success of the S1 and S2 RAP we introduced the S3 programme in September 2020 to help specific individuals reengage with school and home life using rugby as the tool.
The programme has grown and we now consists of 3 timetabled periods a week: 1 classroom theory-based session, 1 strength and conditioning session and one skill-based session , all led by our Development Officer and two staff members. The desired outcome is that the pupils in S3 will achieve the Developing Player Program level 4 award supported by Scottish Rugby, Borders college , Montrose Rugby and Montrose Academy. ( national 4 in rugby ) .
