Westmorland Ba Ba’s v Millom 16/11/14
By Ryan Carter
Millom U16s travelled to Windermere on Sunday to play the Ba Ba’s on a beautiful warm winters day after having struggled during the week to get a team
Millom won the toss & elected to kick off the Ba Ba’s received the ball and set off to attack the Millom forwards with some ferocious tackling from Kieron Coulson, Michael Kirkham & Joe Tomlinson the forwards turned the ball over with some good rucking the ball was then released from the base of the ruck to Connor Penrith who danced over from 22 meters to score out wide on 2 minutes the conversion was missed, BaBa’s kicked off the bouncing ball was taken by Callum Loughran who made good inroads into the barbarians half of the field with several pick & goes by the forwards saw them held 5 meters out some good mauling work saw Kieron Coulson get his hands on the ball to powerfully drive over for the first of his hatrick on 5 mins, con was again missed on 9 minutes after some good interplay between backs & forwards Michael Kirkham picked the ball from the base of the ruck to run in unopposed from 15 meters to score out wide on the right, con again missed, on 14 mins again from a well cleaned out ruck Kieron Coulson got his hands on the ball to dive over out wide again on the right hand side, on 18 mins this time from the Millom dominant scrummage the backs got there hands on the ball and let the ball glide through their hands to put debutant winger Kain Kershaw in at the corner on the left hand side of the pitch Robbie Pattinson converted, on 25 minutes Millom had a line out on the Ba Ba’s 22 this was taken by Michael Kirkham from which the forwards drove towards the line for hooker Jack Kendall to get his hands on the ball to dive over out wide, Kieron Coulson rounded his hatrick of tries of just before half-time with a superb side step & dummy to score under the post with Luke Reid adding the extra’s, HT 0-44.
Millom kicked off the second half & fumble by the Ba Ba’s saw the Millom forwards scrummage dominate again for the ball to picked up by No 8 Callum Loughran from the resulting maul Joe (Tommo) Tomlinson got his hands on the ball to race in from 20 meters to score this was Tommo’s last action as his knee gave way, Luke again converting, Millom then went to sleep & let the Ba Ba’s attack them for the next 10 –15 minutes which resulted in them scoring a well deserved try out wide through there forwards, some words of encouragement from Coaches Loughran & Cummings then seem to encourage the Millom team to start to play structured rugby again, Millom were awarded a line out on the Ba Ba’s 22 and from the resulting take it was like watching a professional team scrum half Pattison screaming at his players to get in & drive 12 players drove this maul to the line for Michael Kirkham to come up the jubilant try scorer, con missed, next on the score sheet was another debutant winger Jamie Cairns from a well set scrum the backs got the ball out to full Back Aaron Bradley who put the most sublime kick in that bounced right up into Cairns’ hands for him to race 25 meters to score under the post which Luke converted, last try of the game also went to Cairns from a defensive kick out by the Ba Ba’s Cairns fielded on the oppositions 10 meter line for to race & jink his way under the post for Luke to again convert this finished the game with the final score 5-70.
Coaches Parko / Chummer & Loughran were pleased with the overall performance however it was emphasised to the players that going to sleep against stronger opposition could / would have been more costly.
Millom men of the match went to Luke Reid who was awesome in both defence & attack & Jack Kendall who was ever dominant in rucks / mauls, general backing up & he also never lost a scrummage all day both his own & the oppositions until we went down to 14 players.
Coach Loughran would like to give a special mention to Jack Killip & Jay Gilbert for playing for the Ba Ba’s.
Millom U16’s entertain Netherall @ home this weekend (23/11/14)with KO 11 O’clock.
