Shirebrook Off To A Winning Start Under New Management

By

A double from Ben Charlesworth and a Lewis Macaskill goal saw Shirebrook pick up a 3-1 win against Selby Town

ATT 115

MOTM Owen

It was the visiting side who started the game better with the new look Shirebrook team struggling to get into the game and Selby took the lead in the 7th minute when Fraser Hanson shot was saved by Levi Owen and Brandon Clarke clearance hit Liam Flanagan and the ball rolled into the goal the forward knew nothing about the goal but was happy to accept the gift that fell his way but Shirebrook didn’t let this get them down and they began to grow into the game with Ban Charlesworth and Robbie Savage both having chances to pull Shirebrook level but in the 32nd minute Selby were awarded a penalty when the ref thought a Shirebrook defender had handled a shot but the defender could do nothing about the shot with how close he was to the shot however justice was done when Levi Owen dived to his right and saved Liam Flanagan penalty and Shirebrook made Selby pay the ultimate penalty as they levelled the scores in the 34th minute when Carter Widdowson booted the ball upfield and found Ben Charlesworth and he raced through 1 on 1 with the Selby keeper and smashed it into the net and Charlesworth and Shirebrook afternoon got even better 2 minutes later when an almost carbon copy of the first goal happened again with another long ball from Widdowson finding Charlesworth and again the forward found himself 1 on 1 this time he put the Selby keeper on his backside as he rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net and on the stroke of half time Charlesworth almost had his 3rd of the afternoon but put his shot wide of the post.

It was an even start to the second half with both sides having chances to score with the best Shirebrook chance falling to Robbie Savage when Lewis Macaskill cross from the right found Savage in the box and he forced the Selby keeper into an excellent save but as the Selby began to throw more and more men forward it was Shirebrook goalkeeper Levi Owen who managed to keep everything out but Shirebrook managed to get that all important goal in the 78th minute when Macaskill fired home to all but put the game to bed and the afternoon got even worse for Selby as they were reduced to 10 men when Reuben Pearse was given his marching orders for a bad tackle on Robbie Savage and with nothing left to play for Shirebrook saw out the rest of the game and picked up all 3 points

After the game Shirebrook assistant manager Carl Plastow spoke to The Bootiful Game to give his thoughts on the game

“Our first game in charge, so we couldn’t be prouder of the lads from the start, I thought we had the better chances, although the turning point in the game was the penalty saved by Levi. After that, we found something extra in the locker and found two quick goals and getting the third killed the game off. It was a fully deserved win in the end and a brilliant start for us in the NCEL”

Shirebrook are back in action next Saturday when Hallam FC visit Langwith Road 3pm ko
