Match Report From Stowmarket v Southwold

Written by David Vaughan

Stowmarket had everything to play for as they battled for a place in the play-off for promotion, and they did their job by comprehensively beating Wold on the day, only to be denied their place by Romford and Gidea Park who held their nerve and their second place spot in the league by beating Saffron Walden at home and hence taking that play-off spot.
Wold's place in the league next season was already assured and the difference of having nothing really to play for did kick in towards the end of the game
It was however honours even for Wold and Stow this year with both teams winning at home following Saturdays game.
On the day though Wold losing both James Hall and Chris Aldous in the first quarter it was always going to be an uphill battle especially with Dean Basson at No 8 not having recovered from his groin strain before the game having starred in recent games.
Until the injuries Wold had more possession and threatened more than once to score, but after their double man loss they simply battled to stay in the game as Stow grew in confidence following their first converted try wide on the left where they simply out paced the Wold defence.
Wold held on however for a further twenty minutes or so with no further scoring until half time, and at only 7 - 0 in Stow's favour the game was still alive
Stow got their second try from a pick and go only five minutes in to the second half and further tries followed in the 60th, 74th and 77th minutes as Wold visibly tired as the game progressed under the constant Stow pressure.
With all the tries converted bar the last one the 33 - 0 score-line was a fair reflection of the game and it was the first time this season that Wold had failed to affect the scoreboard
These two teams will now have to battle it out all over again next season but congratulations to Stowmarket on a great first season in London 2 North East, and how near they came to the possibility of even more glory than their deserved third place finish
Wold can also reflect on a good season overall, having achieved their aim of remaining in the league in what was also their inaugural season at this level.
Other weekend results relegated Basildon, Harlow and the unfortunate Cantabrigian who were leap-frogged at the final fence by South Woodham Ferrers managing to keep their place in the league by overcoming Wanstead while Cantabs lost to Norwich. Certainly a last gasp drama on the day and well done to Ferrers for a great escape
There would have been be a few hangovers in that part of Essex on Sunday morning !!

MOM for Wold
Jonah Cunningham who made three stunning line breaks
and had to substitute at Hooker for three quarters of the game and
coped more than adequately to say the least. Brilliant effort.
