Curzon Hang On In Derby

By

Local bragging rights go to Curzon after Robins slow start. Report by Dave Robinson.

Curzon narrowly won the Ashton derby and thus maintained their unbeaten start to the season at a windswept Tameside stadium. Ashton were without captain Jay Gorton but made the first inroads as Kayde Coppin reached the byline and saw his cross deflect off a defender to Richard Bennett who side footed straight at Burton. The hosts then took the lead with their first real attack as Watson put Cummins clear down the right and saw his cross rebound back to Watson who fired past Phillips with the aid of a deflection. Walker then saw a dangerous cross to the near post cleared by Greg Pearson but from the resulting corner the ball cleared Phillips leaving Hunt to knock home the second just after the midway point of the half.

Immediately Watson got free again but dragged his left foot effort across goal and then another corner was headed just past the far post by Cummins as Curzon took full advantage of the wind behind them. Ashton then won a free kick 20 yards out which saw Baguley’s effort deflected just wide and Garry Gee head the resulting corner straight at Burton with no power.

After the turnaround it was Ashton who had the gale at their backs and it took only 6 minutes before sub Robinson released Pilkington for a fine right foot finish to bring the visitors back into the argument. However, just on the hour Roberts-Nurse dwelt on the ball leading to Brooke being played into the clear from where he was brought down by Coppin who was red carded as the last man and within 5 minutes Curzon had extended their advantage as Brooke’s pass put Watson free by the byline and his cross was knocked into his own net by Jack Higgins. The home side could have extended their advantage even further as Brooke’s cross was dragged wide by centre forward Cummins.

Pilkington then exchanged passes with Bennett and had a clear run through for another fine finish to give Ashton hope again and he could have completed a hat trick as he raced in behind the last defender but was just denied by Burton with Lee Rick slicing the rebound wide. The visitors’ last chance to salvage a point saw Robinson’s pass helped on into Burton’s arms by Pilkington.

Team: Phillips, Coo, Roberts-Nurse (Rick), Pearson, Higgins, Young, Baguley (Robinson), Gee, Bennett (Tuanzebe), Pilkington & Coppin.
SNU: Chadwick & Haslam.
