Creating answer for Colts

When Acklam RUFC hosted a Friday Night Colts Pitch Up & Play run by the RFU’s local Community Rugby Coaches and Rugby Development Officer, more than 50 players were there. And the event is still having an impact.

Four clubs, the hosts plus Redcar, Middlesbrough and Guisborough were all struggling with Colts’ availability on Sundays. The evening saw their players involved in different rugby formats, with teams mixed and all just loving having a game of rugby.

The referee was an Acklam Young Rugby Ambassador Alexander Faint who was introduced to refereeing through his school Trinity Catholic College linked to the club through the CBRE All Schools programme.

The momentum created continues, with the four clubs having set up a WhatsApp group and now regularly communicating, helping one another out with players to fulfil fixtures on Sundays as well as setting up three more Friday Night events.

Said Richie Young Community Rugby Coach: “It’s at Colts level that players can be lost to the game because young players have many commitments and distractions.

"It’s great to be working with four clubs to provide nights of enjoyable mixed format games. And now they are working together to make sure anyone who wants a game can get one and clubs don’t have to cry off for lack of players. Hopefully this will keep local Colts in the game for longer, which will also boost their confidence and give them skills for life.”
