An excellent team performance by Acklam earns them a big win at Whitby
Acklam produced a fine display of attacking rugby to earn a very good win against a spirited Whitby team.
Whitby kicked off against the wind and were soon penalised , with Acklam stand off Danny Ashton kicking the penalty to give the visitors an early 3 point lead.
The visitors were starting quickly and soon afterwards a good move was finished off by full back Brad Gater, with Ashton's conversion making it 0-10.
Acklam put Whitby under pressure again after the restart and Ashton kicked another penalty. Acklam were looking to score again and a few minutes later long serving second row Tim Savage looped around to set up a good position from which centre Chris Walker crashed through under the posts to increase the visitors ' lead to 20-0.
Then Acklam used one of their trump cards, bringing in Josh Abraham from the opposite wing to beat several defenders and score, making it 27-0.
After putting Acklam under pressure Whitby were eventually rewarded by a pushover try, converted to get them on the scoreboard at 7-27. However, Acklam were soon back on the offensive and after a good break by winger Jacob Robinson prop Paul Owens powered his way over for the bonus point try and another Ashton conversion gave the visitors a comfortable 7-34 lead at half time.
Despite facing the wind in the second half Acklam were immediately on the attack and more good work by Savage put his second row partner Danny Moss in to score. The visitors were looking dangerous every time they had possession and a lovely dummy by young scrum half Nathan Faint created a try for replacement Andy Dunn.
Then in another sparkling move Abraham fed Walker who put the ball back inside for Marcus Sudron to score. Whitby continued to fight and scored their second try from a quick tap penalty. Acklam had the final word, however. After another Whitby attack the visitors broke away - Abraham made ground, Faint and Sudron continued the move and a great try was again finished off by Gater. This gave Acklam a 60-14 win in an excellent team performance.
