Lessons learnt from tough day

A depleted Boston Buccaneers team were on the receiving end of a thrashing dished out by the inform league leaders Sherwood Wolfhunt. Coach Dearing's game plan was hampered by last minute player unavailability meaning only 16 players were available for the contest.

The game started brightly for the Buccaneers as they made great yards through Jake Keeton and Jack Wright putting the home side on the back foot. However, against the run of play the home side scored first going into a 4-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the Buccaneers marched up the field with Brad Nixon feeding rampant forwards Glenn Allison and Harry Atkinson. In form fullback Scotty Stevenson ran a great line to dab down under the sticks, the extras were added by John Hummel.
From the restart winger Jack Rules seized the initiative catching defenders napping he set off on a 70 metre darting run to score a great individual try converted by John Hummel. Sherwood were soon back in the game and some strong running got themselves on the scoreboard. Things still looked positive with the visitors leading 12-8 however the interchanges from Sherwood proved to be the difference with fresh players carving holes in the tiring Buccaneers defence. At half time Sherwood were leading 32-12.

Coach Jim Dearing rang the changes at halftime bringing on forwards Saulius Kaleda, Grant Laws, and Matt Keeton. Despite some punishing running by fresh legged forwards the Buccaneers struggled to make any dents in a strong and well organised Sherwood defensive line. Despite Scotty Stevenson, Jack Rules and Jake Keeton's best efforts the home side scored 43 unanswered points piling on the misery for the travelling side.
As the game entered the last few minutes Jack Wright crossed the whitewash but was adjudged to have made a double movement. Minutes later John Stanfield put up a high kick which although gathered by a Sherwood defender was lost with Matt Keeton on hand to secure and dab down - unfortunately the try was not give as the referee was unsighted. Man of the match was Jack Rules for his great work in both attack and defence. The final score does not reflect the effort that the travelling Buccaneers put into the game. The Buccs will lick their wounds and make adjustments ahead of their next game on 6 July home to Derby City.

Buccaneers: Stanfield, Fox, J. Keeton, Laws, Hummel, Nixon, Croker, Rules, Stevenson, Philpott, Lloyd, Allison, M.Keeton, Atkinson, Wright, Kaleda.
