Midlands Division One West
Walsall 18 - 13 Camp Hill
Whether it was the delay of one hour before the replacement referee kicked off or something else but this game took quite a while to get going. When it did , it went against us in the eighth minute of stoppage time !
The first half was a very stop - start affair with errors abounding on both sides and thus little continuity ensued.
Centre Ian Briggs put us into the lead after six minutes but the Walsall fly half Matt Wood levelled matters with twenty four gone.
"Briggsy" then landed his second but that was the excitement over for the first half.
With the slope and wind now in their favour the hosts looked a little more lively after the break and their efforts brought them level from Wood's second kick in the forty ninth minute.
Eight minutes later a long kick down field was chased and caught by the pacy home right wing Alex Greenslade allowing him to scoreand make the score 11 - 6.
Camps were trying hard but nothing seemed to gel until five minutes before the end of normal time.
A period of threatening pressure near the Walsall line eventually gained its desserts when replacement lock Jan van der Walt drove over near the corner flag.
A fine conversion from our kicker gave us the lead , albeit by just two points but with time seemingly running out we were hopeful of a narrow success.
Sadly for us but happily for the hosts , play was maintained long enough for a try , almost a carbon copy of their first , as Greenslade set off after a long kick and was judged to have downed the ball first for a try which Wood converted to give Walsall the result , leaving us with just the losing bonus point.
On Saturday , which is our Annual Chairman's Day , we entertain Worcester Wanderers on their first-ever visit to the "Shrine" for a senior match. Kick Off is at 3.00 p.m.
