Glossop North End 0-2 Runcorn Linnets
Glossop end the season with defeat against Runcorn.
Glossop hosted Runcorn on a rainy Saturday at Surrey Street with Runcorn hoping to make the play-offs.
Matty Holmes was called into action early on against his former club, making a smart save low to his right, denying Frank Jones’s diving header, the loose ball was then cleared off the line by George Danaher.
Runcorn then had another chance on 20 minutes to break the deadlock, Ryan Gibson was picked out unmarked in the penalty area, he had so much space and time but fell over and the ball fell behind for a goal kick.
Just minutes later and Holmes denied Runcorn again. A lovely passing move found Freddie Potter but Holmes was out quickly to save his goal bound effort.
Runcorn needed a win to stand any chance of making the play-offs and were trying desperately to score, captain Paul Shanley theatrically fell over inside the penalty area and the referee rightly so was unmoved.
Runcorn were awarded a soft free kick moments before half time, Louis Corrigan stepped up and fired a neat finish past Holmes to give the visitors the lead into half time.
Glossop started the second half well, having lots of possession in the final third, however could not find the final ball.
Jason Hill had a powerful shot from distance saved by the keeper whilst at the other end, Holmes made a cracking save to deny Kristian Holt from range.
Glossop pushed forward, Jack Tuohy had a shot saved with just seven minutes to go.
Glossop had one last chance to equalise, substitute Matthew Hanson delivered a wonderful cross, Tuohy managed to divert the ball towards goal but keeper Scott made a fantastic reaction save to deny Glossop.
Runcorn then went up the other end on the counter and with Glossop having committed players forward, Runcorn managed to work the way into the box and Potter doubled the visitors lead.
Glossop ended the season with a defeat and will be back in action for pre-season, starting off with a visit to Irlam FC on Tuesday the 9th July.
