It's a funny old game

By

Rhyl 4 Guilsfield 1

Guilsfield suffered an away defeat at the Belle Vue but the result could not be forecast, especially after our first half performance.
Guilsfield were dealt an early blow with the withdrawal of captain Robbie James through illness, and this led to a re-shuffle at the back. However, this did not seem to fluster the Guils, who took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, with Hill-Dunt having to pull off a save from Adam Jenkins in the first 20 seconds of the game.
Guilsfield continued to press on and gave Rhyl plenty to think about through out the half as Jenkins had a further 3 good chances to finish off our good work. Steve Blenkisop was buzzing around the Rhyl rearguard as well, causing the defenders to commit a number of professional fouls.
Rhyl's first shot on target came in the 31st minute as a tame free kick was easily gathered by Mike Jones in the Guilsfield goal. Against the run of play, Rhyl took the lead on 40 mins as Mike's punched clearance out of the area fell to the feet of a Rhyl player who found the net with a sweet strike.
Guilsfield had played some lovely football in the first period but had failed to take their chances to put Rhyl on the back foot. HT (1-0).
The Rhyl management team had clearly plenty of information to dish out at half time and the Lilywhites came out in the second half with intent. Guilsfield suffered another sucker punch on 58 mins as the unfortunate Andy Ford saw his glanced header find his own net (2-0). On 64 mins, a good save by Mike was deflected out to sub Joe Sullivan who tapped into the empty net. Then followed a bizarre incident which summed up our day as the Assistant Linesman deemed the ball had crossed the line in a goalmouth melee. The players on both sides were carrying on with the game as the whistle was blown, and after consultation, a goal was awarded.
Guilsfield had a consolation goal on 80 mins with youngster James Parry netting his first goal for the club.
Final score 4-1.

Team: Jones, Bromley, Parry, Rogers, Litchfield, Ford, Weetman, Cathrall, Blenkinsop, Jenkins, Richards. Subs: Clifton (Cathrall), Harris (Weetman), Leonard.
