Reds draw in Godmanchester

By

Haverhill's best away performance of the season somehow ended without them taking away all three points.

The game started with Marcus Hunt having an effort headed off the line after just 45 seconds and Stuart Kingham having a shot blocked on it on six minutes.

The hosts, with their first and one of only four real attacks, then went ahead in the 10th minute against the run of play, a ball in from the right finding Mike Hyem, who was given space and his mis-hit volley was just enough to get it past goalkeeper Ed Wootten.

An amazing save by home 'keeper Carl Mackney fingertipped Ross Elkins' excellent drive after Jack Wilkinson's lay off and Elkins also headed inches over from just wide of the post to leave the away side 1-0 down at the break.

They started the second period as they had left the first, Jack Higgs having a shot cleared off the line and another taking place before five minutes had even passed.

Haverhill got the goal they deserved in the 63rd minute, yet another good move culminating in Marc Abbott putting a ball over the top and Jack Higgs taking on his marker; his square ball took a slight deflection but, with a bit of luck finally falling to the away side, it still found Wilkinson and he placed the ball wide of Mackney with a controlled shot to even up the game.

A point blank save from Wootten denied Hyem a second goal in the closing stages, Godmanchester appealing what they believed was a goal when Hyem's effort was fingertipped on to the underside of the bar by Wootten, crashed down and bounced near the goal line; the goal wasn't given and two players were booked for dissent as a result.

Charlie Bowan's header from a corner also came back off a Haverhill post after what seemed an age in the final goal mouth incident of an excellent game overall and for the away side.
