Chorley 2-0 Nuneaton Borough
League leaders Chorley boosted their hopes of promotion with a 2-0 win over Nuneaton Borough.
A curling strike from Alex Newby and an Adam Blakeman penalty were the difference at Victory Park, despite a positive performance from the visitors.
Boro came and played fearlessly, containing the hosts for the best part of an hour as their resilient defence held firm.
Blakeman hit the underside of the crossbar for the Magpies in the opening stages, with Marcus Carver also coming close, but the hosts were unable to break the deadlock in the first-half.
Chorley started the second period strongly and struck the post moments after the restart, when Carver’s cushioned header was millimetres from finding the corner.
Boro had some chances themselves as they looked to cause an upset. Some good individual skill from Josh Lundstram created some space, but his curling shot went wide of the far post.
Just after the hour mark, Chorley took the lead when Newby hit a dipping effort into the far corner from the edge of the box, leaving Belford helpless in the Boro goal.
Boro searched for an equaliser in the closing stages but Chorley proved difficult to break down, with the hosts eventually gaining an unassailable lead when Blakeman scored a penalty after Rhys Sharpe brought down Newby.
The result sees Chorley go three points clear at the summit of the National League North, while Boro remain bottom.
