REPORT | Parkgate 3-2 Glasshoughton Welfare

By George Morris

Jonathan Fusco scores twice at Roundwood to hand the Steelmen another victory.

The visitors, Glasshoughton Welfare, proved a difficult test for Parkgate, with the home side needing a stoppage time goal from the man inform, Jon Fusco, to confirm victory and making it two wins from two games.

The first goal of the game came in the opening minute as confusion in the Parkgate back-line meant Craig Tonkinson found himself 5-yard from goal supplying his side with a simple tap-in for one-nil.

After his debut goal last week, Jon Fusco put himself on the scoresheet once again, receiving the ball on the right-wing from Ollie Yates, before the Parkgate Forward fired from a somewhat tight angle to level the score.

Andy Dawson’s men then began to grow into the game with good speed of possession and some half chances. However, no goal was to be scored before the half-time interval, and the teams went in level.

HALF-TIME | Parkgate 1-1 Glasshoughton Welfare

Likewise to the first moments of the first-half, a goal was scored early on but this time it was for Parkgate. Holden didn’t give up the chase for a through-ball and he managed to win the battle with his defender and chip the ball over the keeper to give the home side the lead for the first time in the game.

On the 56th minute the referee had a big call to make when the Glasshoughton keeper dropped the ball well over the line but the referee waved play on, failing to see the incident clearly.

The mistake by the officials was to soon cost the Steelmen as 5 minutes later, Glasshoughton levelled the score-line, besting Butt in the Parkgate net.

The Steelmen had a few nervy spells, with Welfare applying the pressure to find a winner at Roundwood but didn’t manage to find that one clinical finish.

Fusco had the ball in the net after Bagley picked him out with a cross but the linesman has his flag up on the far side for offside.

Fusco, Bagley and Harrison all had great chances to put their side back in the lead but all failed to make the chances count.

With the score at 2-2, Jon Fusco produced another piece of magic in stoppage time when he cut inside from the left and fired low into the bottom corner to hand Parkgate 6 points from a possible 6.
