Retford FC made it a 100% start with two wins out of two as they rose to the top of the table after victory over Brigg Town at The Rail Ground.

Two players were making their 50th appearance for the Choughs, Adam Scott and Old Bilham both playing a pivotal part in the victory, Retford started strongly, awarded a penalty in the 7th minute after Will Tomlinson was bundled over in the box, he stepped up to take the spot kick, but it was saved by the Brigg keeper, Shay Evans-Booth was on hand to fire the rebound into the back of the net for his first of the afternoon.

In the 15th minute, Adam Scott became the first Retford player of the season to enter the “sin-bin” after his protests over a free kick conceded just outside the box, the Referee sending the player from the field with a yellow card and a 10 minute session on the proverbial “naughty step”. The Brigg free kick came to nothing and ten-man Retford were able to build again, and they did when Evans-Booth found the net once more for his second of the afternoon on 22 minutes, stretching to put the ball past the keeper from close range.

The headlines will go to the young striker, who also hit the post in the first half saw his good form continue from pre-season into the regular season. A third well taken goal a few minutes before half time for his hat-trick gives him four goals in two games and he’s certainly one to watch as the season progresses.

The second half started much the same as the first ended, Retford straight on the attack, Adam Scott this time smashing the ball past the Brigg keeper on 47 minutes to effectively put the game beyond doubt.

Brigg did win a penalty on the hour, Haydn Goddard sent to the sin-bin for his protests, but they fell on deaf ears as Jake Reed stepped up and put the ball past Jon Kennedy.

Retford could, and should have further extended their lead, but the four goals were enough to send them to the top of the table and show those around them their intent as they now prepare to face Hallam FC next Saturday at the Rail.
