Match report: SCRFC Ladies vs Millwall Venus

By

In their last home league game of the season, the ladies were victorious in a bonus point win.

With 17 degree weather, clear blue skies and the sun shining down, you would be forgiven for anticipating a day of sevens. However, it’s February and Streatham were instead welcoming Millwall ladies to the Frant Road fortress in their last home game of the season. Going into the game 4th in the league, they were hoping that a bonus point would bump the team to 3rd.

From kick off Streatham made good territory and put Millwall under a reasonable amount of pressure, however, slips in the defence and a lack of organisation saw Millwall work their way down the pitch. Streatham conceded an early try which was well converted to see them 0-7 down.

This was the wakeup call that Streatham needed. The first Streatham try came from great pressure in the scrum. An attempted clearance from behind their own try line was expertly charged down by scrum half Dani Reynolds who caught the ball from her own deflection and grounded it. Unfortunately, Jenny Frost was unable to convert so Millwall retained the lead 5-7.

Streatham’s sustained pressure gave them a few opportunities, but Millwall’s defence remained strong. A couple of high tackle penalties gave Streatham the front foot and a quick tap saw the ball go to Dani Reynolds in the corner for her second of the game. Jenny Frost was successful with a tricky conversion 12-7.

Jenny Frost was also instrumental in Streatham’s third try, with a great clearance kick seeing Streatham progress down field. Winger Amy Allen was caught metres short of the try line, and whilst the forward pods drew in the defence, the ball went out to Frost who put in a neat grubber kick behind the Millwall defence. Winger Kimmy ‘Catfish’ Bennett picked up the ball at pace and was able to ground in the corner for her first league try, bringing the score to 17-7.

Streatham kept up the pressure, with the defence giving Millwall few options other than route 1. Streatham’s backs were pulling out all the tricks, and Phili May demonstrated her uncanny ability to find the try line. Her first came just before half time, which Jenny converted bringing the score to 24-7. The game was broken in play twice during the second half due to a helicopter landing, but Streatham were able to retain their composure and structure. Phili scored two in quick succession after she was able to find space around the outside of the defence, both were converted bringing the score to 38-7.

The conditions were perfect for some running rugby, and with a great platform from the scrum and the line out they were able to take advantage of the space. After substitute winger Rain Robinson was denied in the corner, Amy Allen having been denied on multiple occasions on her wing finally managed to get her reward through an exceptional crash ball on the other side of the pitch, bringing the full time score to 43-7.

This bonus point victory sees Streatham go to 3rd in the league. Next Sunday (3rd March) Streatham travel to Sutton & Epsom to take on the league leaders. It'll be a difficult game so any support to rally the drums would be welcomed.
