Close loss at Sheffield

An early start to Sheffield today, and a trip to Hallam Sports Ground to play the Steelers. Good bacon butties and a well earned brew were the order of the day on arrival.

Sheffield proved today that they are now a genuine contender at U14 this season, taking a one goal victory against the hitherto unbeaten Timperley U14A team. We knew beforehand that Sheffield had a good goalie and a very effective face off man, and they both lived up to their reputation.

Taking the game as a whole, Timperley actually created more chances than Sheffield, and during the second half cracked the face off and started to win some ball. So, there’s no need to take this defeat as anything other than a game where we learned a lot about ourselves. I always reckon on taking more from a close game than a blowout, and today was very demonstrative of this fact. The boys know there are areas today where we weren’t quite on our game, and Patrick can work on these in training. It was certainly the best we’ve played for a good number of weeks.

Both teams know that the result could have gone either way; there was never more than one goal in it for three quarters. Sheffield got into a 7-5 lead late in the fourth quarter, and in spite of a 6th goal, we were unable to draw level and take home what would probably have been a deserved draw.
