League Leaders Prove Too Strong for Depleted Walsall

Last week,Walsall produced one of their best performances of the season, when they secured a convincing victory over promotion challengers Leek. But that success came at a cost ,with five players being forced to miss their next match. It was therefore a team showing four changes in the Walsall pack that travelled to deepest Shropshire last Saturday. This meant a starting place for two of Walsall ex Colts,George Green and Louis Vale with Joe Brookes coming on to make his debut during the second half. The reshuffled line up was very competitive for most of the game and kept control of the ball for long periods. But the hosts showed their attacking expertise as soon as they gained possession. Unfortunately, the visitors chose to kick away their possession at times. This, often, proved to be costly ,as the Ludlow counter attack showed why they have scored nearly 200 points more than virtually all the other teams in the league. The hosts scored within a minute off the kick off, but the visitors then showed good ball retention skills to take play deep into Ludlow territory. However, as soon as they lost possession, a length of the field sweeping attack resulted in another try. The final ten minutes of the half, saw Walsall once again threaten to make a breakthrough. They deserved some reward for their efforts and it was disappointing to see a late tackle on scrum half Ainger, and a dangerous lineout challenge going unpunished. Both incidents were in good attacking positions. As in previous situations in the game, Ludlow gained possession and took play to the Walsall line before scoring from a scrum. It was a similar scenario throughout the second half as Walsall would often press forward and then their opponents would gain possession. This would instigate another attack involving strong running and close support play. As Walsall contrived to launch attacks, they committed errors and their hosts were quick to pounce and they added another five tries during the rest of the game to maintain their position at the top of the league.
