First game

By Steve Risby

Both sides lose

After rain overnight and first thing we weren’t confident of getting a game in but the weather improved and we travelled to Henlow to play Letchworth 5ths. They batted first and got off to a slow start, well restricted by Imran and Khan. Then Khan made a breakthrough but unfortunately this bought their star batsman to the crease who proceeded to hit us all round the ground, two sixes landing on the roofs of nearby houses plus a number of others that went almost as far. Eight different bowlers tried and failed to get him out and he eventually retired on 200 as Letchworth put up 310 for 3 off their 40 overs. Letchworth’s bowling wasn’t in the same class as their batting and we made a very respectable 274 for 5 in response, gaining maximum batting points. Good contributions from Simon and Nick Griffin (both 56), Jon Albon (39 not out), Raees Khan (30 not out) and a cameo from Imran Khan (33). Despite the high score there were some good bowling performances and lots of encouragement from the batting, which is a good start for the season.
