Westbury Ladies get a final win in their last game of 2016

By

Westbury Ladies managed to secure the win to head into the New Year undefeated

Westbury ladies welcomed Chew Valley to Knott Field for their last game of 2016, on Sunday. The ladies were in a buoyant mood and eager to keep their winning run going. Chew, themselves, were on a 5-game winning streak so hopes were high for a great game.

Chew kicked off and put Westbury straight under pressure. Some bad handling from Westbury lead to a turn over, Westbury then infringed resulting in a penalty. Quick thinking from the Chew No.6 saw her tap and go, to sprint clear to score the first points of the afternoon. Conversion missed 5-0.

Westbury rallied round and managed to get some possession. Chew were putting the Westbury team under constant pressure, as they did all afternoon. Westbury were awarded a penalty and worked the ball well to winger Vicky Stanley who sprinted clear for her 7th league try of the season. Lana Plummer converted to make it 7-5.

Westbury, playing some good rugby, began to build the phases with the forwards carrying well. The ball was worked to centre Jess Wells who ghosted through the defence and sprinted 40 meters to touch down. She duly converted her own try to make it 14-5.

Not to be outdone, Chew came straight back at Westbury and again from a quick tap penalty, their No.6 got her second of the game. Conversion missed 14-10.

The rest of the first half was a stalemate with both sides attacking hard and the defence holding firm.

Westbury kicked off the second half and built some good pressure in the Chew 22. Chew's defence again held strong. Chew then turned defence into attack and built some good phases. Westbury's defence likewise holding strong with some great tackling from the back row of Carrie Needham, Jane Brown and Wendy Baker-Mitchell. Both teams gave all they had with neither team being able to cross the try line. The final score ended 14-10 to Westbury.

A very hard fought win, with the whole team putting their bodies on the line. Credit must also go to Chew Valley whose defence was excellent all game.

Special mention to Wendy for forward of the match and to back of the match, Maeve Taylor.

Westbury ladies finish the first half of the league season undefeated, with their next match away to Old Bristolians on Sunday 8th January.
