Close run thing for 1XV vs Winnington Park
By Tracy Bailey
AK clinching the win & still top of the league
Altrincham Kersal 1st XV were back in action this week after a gap week in the Lancs/Cheshire Division 1 League.
They hosted Winnington Park in what proved to be a very tough encounter.
Winnington took the lead with a penalty after a quarter of an hour having made good use of the blindside in a number of moves and despite some very strong defence from the home team.
Altrincham responded quickly with a breakaway try by Thorburn which was converted by Yates. A further Altincham try by Jon Coulson and again converted by Yates left the home side with a 14-3 advantage.
Park then countered with a converted try of their own to make the score 14-10.
Altrincham responded with a further try at which the pack were assisted by centre Robinson who drove over for the score to which Yates added the extra two points. 21-10 at half time.
The second half was a fairly torrid affair with both sides attacking and defending. Park took an early penalty and went on to score a try to make the score 21-18. The home side pressed steadily in the last ten minutes and were looking increasingly dominant until a loose pass close to the Park try line was intercepted and the action moved to the home 22 area for the last 2 minutes. Altrincham held out with some very solid defence and the final scoreline was 21-18.
This means Altrincham Kersal maintain their lead at the top of the Lancs/Cheshire Division 1 League and looking forward to what should be a tough match vs Glossop away next week who sit in third place.
