So a tough ask for the Raiders today as they welcomed Winnersh Wolves to Frimley Green. Always a tough side and we were not only missing some influential players due to injury and Uni but one was added who just couldn't be bothered to turn up.
We lost the toss and were asked to kick with the wind in the 1st half. The visitors looked lively in the opening 10 minutes with some good interchanges and created a couple of good chances that were missed, saved or blocked by the outstanding Walid. Slowly we started to use the wind and pegged the Wolves back. After a couple of close calls we took the lead when Funnell headed home a corner. Minutes later and the 1st of 2 outrageous game events happened. Brindles got the ball and launched us on the attack, first it bounced over the defender, then the goalkeeper and as it was going into the net Mr Brooks smashed it home form around 4 inches. Just to make the half time tea taste sweet Liam caught everyone out with a low free kick. 3-0 at half time.
Half time was about the need to be strong for the first 15 against the wind and in all honesty the defence and midfield were fantastic repelling everything the Wolves could throw at us and I have never heard Brindles command his defence so brilliantly. So with 20 minutes gone and no breach up came incident number 2. No need to explain as we were lucky to have a photographer capture the moment the away side won a penalty. Dispatched with ease. 3-1 with 25 left and thoughts were drifiting to a comeback. Not to be though as we upped the tempo and within 5 minutes Brooks scored his 2nd with the sort of finish we had hoped to see when we signed him in the summer. This effectively finished the game as we comfortably held out.
The whole team were fantastic today in tough conditions and I could mention all of them for their efforts. This will be the last time we play the Wolves and after many a battle over the years we wish all of them the best of luck as they take the next step in their lives.
