The day may have been bright and sunny but Allington Cricket Club didn’t shine.

The ethos of Allington Cricket Club is to create a team where players can come and go, enjoy playing but not to feel pressured to play every week and therefore have some Saturdays elsewhere.
So a few of the squad were absent, but this just gave others the opportunity to play. So a short hop down the A350 to Lacock to play on the recreation ground in the centre of one of the prettiest and most filmed locations in the country,

El Capitan lost the toss and Lacock elected to bat. So with a revised bowling line up, Allington took to the field with plenty of sun screen. Pace came from Windmill Wayne and Hamstrings (new nickname) Sam spinning from the other end. Both kept Lacock honest in the opening 12 overs, taking 2 wickets for 30 (Hamstrings taking both).

Change of batsman and change of bowling with the young strike force of Jack Smith and Will Summers. Unfortunately Jack took a beating in his first over with strong hitting from Lacocks, D.Hiscocks with three 4’s off his first 3 balls. Jack went on to bowl his maximum allocation of 9 overs for a very respectable 22.

Drinks came early which was a welcome relief in the heat as well as the relentless hitting from Lacocks batting, both young and old. The pair took the score on to 92 from 26 overs before El Capitan pitched one up and the high scoring (61) Hiscocks smashed it to mid-wicket specialist Greg (since Blisters keeps dropping them).

Lacock’s middle order batsman stepped up to the plate (wrong sport, I know) and took advantage of Allingtons variable consistency with the ball, smashing full tosses or leg side balls out of the park (into the road, back gardens and the Red Lion car park) adding 100 runs in the next 12 overs. Its fair to say whilst the bowling resulted in 4 wickets, we didn’t do well in the field. Hamstrings was basically unable to move in the field and unable to stop boundaries, and with Lacock’s Marine, Gifford, using his muscles, Lacock were amassing a good score.

Allington continued to mix things up trying everything and every bowler (minus Griff), bringing Ankles on in partnership with Starsky to mop up the tail end. After the big hitter was taken behind the stumps by Smithers (5 wickets for the season so far), Lacock only survived a further 3 overs and added 9 runs. The damage had been done however by three batsman, Hiscocks, Harding (youth player) & Gifford, amounting 149 between them.

Hamstrings led the bowling taking 2 for 14 off 7 followed by Starsky with 2 for 17 off 2.3 overs and Paul with 2 for 34 off 5.
Lacock all out for 202 in the 41st over. Bowling points at least for Allington.

Griff and El Capitan took to the field after tea with a modest 4.5 runs per over target. Griff keen to improve on his previous opening partnership performance with Alex.
The pair started well with 9 off the first over, spirits were high. By the tenth over, Allington were just below the batting average curve as Lacock kept a tight line. By the 13th over however it started to fall apart for the visitors, with 2 wickets falling in one over. Griff fell to an unfortunate call for a catch behind the wicket that to be fair to Lacock, agreed afterwards it was an honest mistake with Griff hitting his pads and not the ball.

Jack was caught and bowled for nought, unfortunately he wasn’t the only little duck with the injured Hamstrings and Smithers achieving the same score for the team. Whilst the tail end fell away, a shining beacon of batting came from Starsky, hitting a respectable 42 (previous ducks forgiven) facing multiple changes in bowlers and supporting batsman, eventually being caught on the long mid-on boundary. Greg and Paul battled valiantly but Allington had simply run out of options and were bowled out in the 34 over for 122.

Well played Lacock, a very strong hitting display, ensuring poor bowling was punished (Greg I said I wouldn’t mention your numbers), combined with too many ducks (editor not happy with himself) or only scoring a single run.

However, we are Allington, we go again, heads up and a longer trip to Warminster next Saturday. #COYA’s
