GUTS, DETERMINATION AND VICTORY (4th May)
By Roger Knight
Dunvant had to fight for the full 80 minutes to overcome a determined Starch and snatch a 20-22 win to secure 2nd place in Division 1 West.
Even though Dunvant finished 2nd just above the Starch in 3rd last season they outgunned us on both occasions winning 5-16 at Broadacre and 42-37 in an absolute thriller at Gowerton . This season they got a 3rd consecutive victory against us winning 15-22 at Broadacre last September but the return game on December 29th was postponed as Gowerton couldn’t raise a side for which they were docked 2 points. At that time Gowerton were riding high in 2nd place.
Since then Gowerton have been on a downward slide and today they were locked in 9th place against fierce rivals Dunvant in 5th place needing 1 win and 4 points in 2 games to take 2nd place.
Playing on the 2nd team pitch due to a cricket match, Gowerton kicked off but Dunvant got the first score with a penalty goal from 10 Adam Williams-Parry.. Gowerton responded on 20 minutes with a try from outside half Bleddyn James, converted by full back Luke Jones to lead 7-3. Dunvant piled on the pressure and a terrific break by outside half Adam Williams–Parry saw him score both a try and conversion to put Dunvant back in the lead 7-10. With half time approaching Gowerton got their 2nd converted try to lead14-10 and on the cusp of the half time whistle an Adam Williams-Parry penalty kick brought Dunvant back within a point for a half time score of Gowerton 14 Dunvant 13.
Shortly after the restart Adam missed a penalty to put us in the lead, Gowerton got a yellow card and started slowing the game down with injuries all over the shop, but still increased the lead to 17-13 with another penalty kick .for 17-13. Dunvant got a yellow card but kept piling on the pressure and two more penalties from Adam firstly brought us to 17-16 and then the second back in the lead for 17-19.Still Gowerton were slowing things down and we had nearly 10 minutes of added time. Another penalty goal for Luke Jones gave the lead back to Gowerton 20-19 but with seconds to go Adam Williams-Parry took his haul for the day to 22 points with another penalty for a final score of 20-22 and a great win.
The win and 4 points took us into guaranteed 2nd place for the second consecutive season and still with a final home game next weekend against relegated Kidwelly.
Elsewhere our 2nd XV playing in the Ospreys regional play offs at Llandarcy came back from 15-13 down at half time to beat Tondu 15-25, well done boys.
